Jeep 4.0 Rear Main Seal Part 1

Jeep 4.0 Rear Main Seal Part 1

Just showing some basics of what’s involved in changing the rear main seal on a Jeep 4.0 motor. I am in no way a pro, and I’m sure there are 100 guys who can…

Is this a common problem? Should I stay away from buying a used Jeep with a
rear main seal leak?

Chris Reynolds says:

Will be doing this tomorrow. I am confident It will go off without a hitch.

ed0985587 says:

I just said screw it and left my oil pan off after I removed it. Has been
running great ever since.

Michael Rogers says:

I’m sorry I missed this question. With the lower bearing cap being built
like it is I really don’t know if it would even be possible. Also, older
models use a lower seal that has little tabs on it that fit into the
bearing cap a specific way so that style certainly couldn’t be rotated.
Good question though, I can see why it would make sense to get the seam of
the seal tucked into the channel, but I’ve never had a problem.

Michael Rogers says:

Hi Julio, as far as I know the RMS on a 5.2 is much more typical in that
you have to drop the transmission and reach it from the rear of the motor.
Don’t take my word for it though.

Julio Balooba says:

would it be the same on my jeep grand cherokee 1995 5.2l v8 ? I’m like 90%
sure my rear main seal is leaking

beardenbulldog7 says:

I don’t see how you can miss the “like” button on this video

beardenbulldog7 says:

This isn’t “just some basics” this is a video of you kicking ass at
explaining to what is seen as the unknown by everyone else!

Passtschon says:

@MichaelRogersLive Thanks for the quick response 🙂 Appreciate it bud.

CatalinaTiger says:

It IS easier to do with a lift as the engine will be sitting higher up over
the axle and give you more clearance to remove the oil pan. It’s especially
a pain on 4 wheel drive models at stock height as the front axle and
steering components are a huge obstruction.

elguapoviejo1 says:

does the rear main seal ned to be rotated off the horizontal? I’ve heard
that the seal should be rotated 3/8″ off the horizontal.

331lilcoupe says:

thanks well it stock height for know waiting on that IRO lift … but 2wd
… not sure if to do it know or when lifted! but one thing i change just a
couple hrs ago was the gasket from the oil filter adapter was leaking like
no tomorrow … thanks again!!

Michael Rogers says:

@XJ Jake No, unfortunately not. It is leaking between where the two halves
meet. That’s not to say yours won’t come out easily, but every one I’ve had
the pleasure of changing has taken some persuasion to tap loose.

punchyourfaceMMA says:

I am doing mine on Saturday, I have the book but I’m more of a visual
guy… This helped a lot thanks….

sLdGlD says:

I am going to attempt this on a 4×4 model straight 6, same year and model.
My question is this…Does the flywheel safety cover and starter need to
come off? Also, I was told that I will have to loosen my front shocks. Is
that necessary? Thanks for the videos- great help. I just need some
pointers on the other things. Seems I cant get to two of my oilpan bolts
until that flywheel cover comes off.

Stefan Wing says:

@MichaelRogersLive what would you recommend for doing that.. i had a
durango and had 2 pay 700 to change the oil pan gasket bc i didnt have the
tools or the time 2 deal with taking half the thing apart let me no asap
before i startt it and cant finish lol.. thanks alot

Tony Saprano says:

Mike, Excellent Vid !! 5 Star 🙂 I have a 02 JGC and there’s a small pin
hole leak at the front of the cover. Drips only after the car is shut
off..Weird . Cleaned it a few times to verify it was the oil pan gasket
(watched it seep out) Ur Vid showed me how to drop the pan 🙂 One ?, The
oil pan gasket u used, who made it ? FEL-PRO ? Thx again.

Michael Rogers says:

The inspection cover, yes, remove it.

Silverws69 says:

Hey bud, Is this the same weather or not you have an auto or manual tranny?

SuperDagod1 says:

The number I found if I am look straight at the engine on the left side of
the engine, the AC side. is this number 102 MX 26 If I call the dealer with
a vin number would they know?

XJ Jake says:

If it’s leaking it should be lubed up enough to slide right out correct?

Michael Rogers says:

I no longer use the M1 5w30 and only use Rotella T6 5w40. I’m at 185k now
and it runs very smooth and burns no oil between changes. The Marvel was a
one time thing that I did after this job just to make sure everything was
cleaned out. I hadn’t owned this WJ for very long at the time and do that
to most of my vehicles for one oil change interval when I first buy them. I
just replaced the head a couple months ago and it was sparkly clean inside.

Johnathan Winters says:

thanks helped a lot…

RVApunkROCK says:

Awesome, got this bookmarked for next weekend. Blew mine yesterday. Luckily
I have access to lifts at work.

SuperDagod1 says:

The oil filter is attached to an adapter that bends at 90 degrees angle. It
does not screw right into the block. How do I know if it is the dreaded
0331 head? Thanks Rob

Nikolas James says:

Great video, Michael… Your efforts are well appreciated, so THANKS a
lot!!!

icepro34 says:

I am doing my 99 Grand Cherokee right now. It has the 4×4 selec-trac and is
not lifted. The only thing I had to remove to get the pan out was the
starter. I did not have to mess with the exhaust, engine mounts, or any
suspension or steering components. I didn’t even take out the flywheel
viewing plate. The hardest part of the job was getting some of the plastic
clips off from the power steering and AC lines which clip into some of the
pan studs, ended up just breaking a some of them off.

bolopopoy says:

Hey man thanks a bunch for posting this video. I have the same car as yours
and I’m actually stuck in removing the flywheel cover. I removed the 3 or 4
bolts around it but how do I pull this thing out? Did you remove the
flywheel cover first before dropping the pan? I’m glad to see that you
didn’t have to remove the y-pipe, I couldn’t remove that too.

JJREUSETECH says:

Thanks man! Got any tips on how to change the cylinder head gasket and
exhaust manifold gasket, that would be great. Thanks man.

Michael Rogers says:

Thanks for your kind words! Yes, it was a Fel-Pro. You just want to make
sure you get the 1 piece rubber seal. I don’t know of anyone who makes the
2 piece any longer but it’s still something to be particular about.

s13konrad says:

Thanks for the Informative video.

michaelheiland123654 says:

What kind of engine oil you used on this Jeep ? because the piston and
connecting rod look dirty like it had sludge ..

XiowTienYuan says:

Did you have to remove the bellhousing plate?

Jeepacreepah01 says:

I’d Imagine the Grand is a little more hard to replace. Doesn’t it have a
“one piece” seal. XJ’s have a 2 piece seal making it easier as many of the
mechanics out there usually drop the tranny to replace the 1 piece but
don’t tell the regular XJ owners that they didn’t use 7 hours of labor but
just drop the oil pan..remove the bolts wedge out the bottom piece then
top…replace… but for some reason I can’t find a video where someone did
it in under 3 hours

lolbrbsoup says:

i’m about to make this same repair on mine. did you have to remove the
track bar to have more space to remove the oil pan?

Tony Saprano says:

Mike, Just noticed in Part 2, U use 5w 30 Mobil ? I’ve been using 10w 40
because my mileage is about 130 and I noticed your Marvel Mystery oil
bottle ?? Any reason why u use a lighter weight oil ? Just curios ..thx
again

Chase DeBoard says:

Dude , you’re way informative. I’m loving your videos.

UBBERTANKER says:

a 2wd jeep how stupid lol

EliteAztec says:

Don’t forget to wear your safety glasses or face shield!

SuperDagod1 says:

This number it’s on the outside parts so I can find it with a flashlight
and some looking? Something else I have learned the hard way with other
vehicles. I don’t flush anything, no radiator flush, no engine flush. I
only drain and fill, A vehicle develops good dirt that builds up around
those seals and I want to keep that good dirt. Does that make any sense.

Tiffani Amey says:

mine went out too:(

Monosyllabicable says:

Buy some ramps dude.. lazy mans jack stands!

SuperDagod1 says:

I think I’m gonna add some dye to the oil and make sure that it is the main
rear seal. Doesn’t the filter area have a seal that I could replace (an o
ring of some type)? How many miles can I rack up on this vehicle? Seems to
be doing fine. I’m proud of the fact that I just changed the valve cover
gasket!

Bakerbrds says:

Appreciate the video!

Jason Garrison says:

Would it be the same as doing it is a 2.5 4 cylinder 5 speed?

Michael Rogers says:

Sorry you’ve had trouble, but as I stated early on, it’s important to have
a good step-by-step manual to guide you along. I simple intended to provide
some visuals. What year are you working on? The rail you mention was on my
early models but not on later ones.

Michael Rogers says:

Not on the 2wd vehicles I’ve worked on, but I think I did on my 4×4 XJ
(that was about 7 years ago so I’m a little fuzzy on the details). The more
suspension lift you have the better, because that will allow you to let the
axle sag further.
