The best way to adjust the worm gear is to remove it from the vehicle IF it is not worn very bad. Go by the book instructions as you can tighten in up too much in the center and it CAN jam at the extreme travel turning right or left and it will NOT return to the center by itself. If it is too worn in the center, replace with a rebuilt or new steering gear. Don't buy a junk yard replacement. Your life can depend on this. Spend the money and stay alive.

Mike Warren says:

Reminds me of the older Ford trucks that had the twin I beam front axle. I knew a very good front end and alignment guy that always said, If you could drive a ford pickup, you could trowel cement! Keep up with the good work Ray. I'm hopeful that Troy really watches and learns. It's really great that you can mentor and teach Troy to be a top notch technician with honesty and integrity.

Andre3 says:

Its gonna be at least one thousand dollars, I can tell you that. This is gonna be expensive.

khrwjt says:

Steering gear boxes used to have an adjustment to tighten the gears to reduce the slop. But that was back in the 1960's.

Sharp old Jeep!

Tim B says:

All Jeeps should have an old-style taxi fare counter running. Constantly.

Era Tera says:

you don't wanna a tight steering wheel on an suv … flip that b!ch over

Normunds Gavars says:

That’s not loose, the holywood steering mode is on.

What a nice looking Jeep! My parents had one of these, 2001 dark green Laredo 4.7 bought used when I was 6 years old. Was a lovely car.

Sold it with 220,000 Kms on it after a year or so to a guy who was exporting it to Germany. It's lovely to see cars from my younger years still on the road!

boogerhead0 says:

Note to those swapping steering gearboxes… the four fasteners on WJ steering box are accessible under front wheel well.

Remove wheel, Remove wheel well liner, Remove Air Filter Box nuts from below, turning fasteners inside air box will get you nothing. Remove Air Filter Box. Remove washer bottle.

Remove steering coupler, Remove Pitman Arm.

——> Apply heat from heat gun to soften the blue thread locker on four Steering Gear screws, before attempting to remove the screws.

Good Day Ray!

Chrysler front ends… There's a reason we make fun of them. I bet it needs ball joints too… The last dodge pickup I drove, was like herding cats down the road… It's funny how quick you get used to the technique. THEN drive a good car, zig zagging down the road…

Arthur Samson says:

Hey look, you can even see the kill people bolt! We always called the Jesus bolt though…

Tex kissmyass says:

I agree with you, replace it. Steering is not something to go cheap on.

Paul Rigney says:

Back in the 70s, I worked for a local Manatee Co police department. Besides law enforcement duties, I also did PM on the cars. I had a gripe for a similar problem. Inspection revealed that 3 of 4 bolts in the rag joint were gone and the 4th was missing the nut.

Bob Hudson says:

Many have commented that you can adjust the nut at the top of the steering box to take out the slack. That's true but the wear is in the centre position with absolutely minimal wear heading towards left and right lock. If adjusted to compensate for wear in the centre, when turned, the steering really tightens up (well beyond reasonable) on both locks. That wear problem can only be fixed on a higher mileage vehicle by replacing the steering head. Each of the steering tie rod ends (plus the idler arm – though this specific vehicle does not have one) also need to be checked. All steering components tend to wear out together, or at minimum, all needs to be checked thoroughly. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.

jeep1943 says:

In Australia the Jeeps had an issue with the steering box ripping out the chassis.

Love that you have Troy caster now
