My son is home from college for the summer and it was nice to finally get in the garage and do some work the XJ. In this video we install a new stereo, speakers, plus a custom DIY ashtray auxiliary switch panel. We also try and hunt down the fuse for our cigarette lighter to see if we can get it working again. Lot’s of electrical stuff in this video!

did you guys cap off that blue remote wire
Soldering like this makes me sad. Solder's purpose is the electrical connection. It should not be relied on for the mechanical connection, especially given the vibration of moving vehicles. A lineman splice is dead simple and a lot stronger.
Just remember a 25 amp short is a serious dead solid short. Check the sockets with a meter as they tend to be poor quality.also try though flashlight…yes you light…daughter put a coin in the socket…..silver and fits well so hard to see!!!yes lot of time chasing a coin……good luck.
Where in San Diego are you i have family in escondido and planing on taking my ZJ
Nice to see you doing project with son. Hope you can find short easily, would not be surprised if someone put a screw through the wire during an install prior to you owning the Jeep.
Nice video man. I think you have two kids, where is the other one?
Coming from a former CH46 avionics tech, It's nice to see good soldering!
The twist ones are designed for solid wire/ House use. They are not meant to be in a vehicle that moves and vibrates.
Wire nuts are never a good option for anything automotive beyond maybe testing. They're designed for solid core house wiring. Butt connectors minimum pretty much solder always.
Glad the XJ is back. Now I have to balance time between my XJ/YJ and new to me JKUR.
Nice to see some love for the XJ…..
What's up with the bare wire @10:32?
Awesome seeing you guys work together!
Great father and son project for bonding.
There's no way you took that jeep to anza borrego…way too clean. I didn't see a spec of dust.
Yessss!!!!!!! We love the XJ videos!!!
This was a cool video. My only comment….who is the guy that gave it a thumbs down?!!! I mean come on. Nice work on the XJ build.
Those parts store cigarette lighters will blow fuses put a chepo like that skull one in my s10 tried to use it and blew the fuse took it out and never blew the fuse again. I think they just draw too much current
They make a crimpable end cap that isnt a household wire nut that most audio shops give out for free to do the job you were using the blue ones for
The XJ is back!! Are you planning on installing the spod system in the XJ? I’m wanting to run that system but trying to figure out where to mount the switches and the fuse block…
My 98 has bad speaker wires in the doors and rear sound bar also. I think it’s a common problem.
Great video as always Brad. Enjoy having your boy home!!!
I love this build. It has made me really want a xj. I think I just might have to get one thank you for the inspiration with the videos. Keep them up great content
Brad first thing I would do is take out the skull and see if the fuse blows. if the fuse still blows try unplugging the lighter socket from the wiring harness. you might save some time that way.
the good thing is you checked the fuses first, when my O2 sensors went out and threw all kinds of codes and made my TJ run like a pig I replaced the sensors which made the code go away for about a day and then it came back, little did I know, that the O2 sensors had fuses and the fuses were just blown, spent 60 bucks and days of troubleshooting to find out a 10 cent fuse was my issue all along LOL.
Awesome video! That switch panel is super clean! great job guys!
Man, I need one of those wire stripping tools! I use an old school tool for it, the tool would save me some serious time (I do a lot of soldering/wiring jobs)! Great video, I think I can speak for all of us, KEEP THE XJ VIDEOS COMIN'!
Great father and son bonding:) Brad, hopefully you'll put a review on that Goal Zero Yeti with your Dometic fridge freezer.
I know your sons are very proud of you with your channel and how much success you’ve had. Keep pushing out great content!
