99 – 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Power steering high pressure hose leak repair

this video will show you how you can replace a leaky power steering hose on a jeep grand cherokee, I believe this will apply to a few models but I’m not sure…

@panamashack this new commenting system sucks.. anyways the tape is Teflon
tape it’s about 90 cents at any hardware store in the plumbing section

I went to the link for the replacement hose. Was it really over $60? My dad
said there were cheaper ones but idk??

Link375… thank you for your time and generosity. This video is very
helpful. I have a slow power steering leak that needs attention soon. The
procedure seems pretty straight forwards and I think I can tackle it
myself. A few notes on some of the technical details. You are using
thread sealer for water pipes. The Power Steering system is high pressure
hydraulic exposed to high heat. I don’t think that is the right choice. I
think you need a heat tested hydraulic thread sealer like Loctite 567 or
5770.
Also, I think your procedure for removing air from the system isn’t
adequate. The Jeep has a fluid cooler. I think it probably takes about 20
turns with the jeep in the air and the tires removed with the cap open to
remove the air bubbles. The Jeep should be off the ground with the wheels
off so it can turn with the engine turned off. After 20 or 30 turns or
when the reservoir stops needing fluid added, I think you start the engine
and turn it off immediately and then top off the fluid. At this point you
should be able to start the engine and cycle the steering wheel several
times with the cap off and the fluid shouldn’t go down(tires still off and
frontend in the air). Once it stops going down, no air bubbles you should
be able to shut the engine, put the cap back on, put the wheels back on and
the system should work smoothly. If not there is still air in the system.

Hi, thank’s for that video, took mine off for replacement but wasnt sure
about the bottom connector, because its only pushed in and because its high
pressure I was afraid… Look’s like its just like that !!
Can someone tell me, my truck was sitting outside for 3 years. I have the
same leak, but even when l filled it up, there was no power steering at
all, no noise, steering’s hard as hell. Also the radiator fan is not
working even if power is there? You think its because of that leak? I mean
did you have fan issue also?

Gladys Mendez says:

Hey link had a question. My power steering seems to be making noise as well
but there’s still fluid inside. Notice it leaks as well. Can it be the hose
I have to replace or pump?

panamashack says:

Hi Link…so I’m having trouble getting the bottom nut loose to come off
from the old hose. Any suggestions for a noobie?

Jeramy Parrish says:

So I bought the new hose from O’reillys with the same kind of fittings on
both sides, but it doesn’t line up with the pump and fan! It’s like there
are too many bends in it or something. I do most of my automotive work at
home and this is killing me. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks!

Moto Olix says:

Good video thank’s helpfull…

link375 says:

no issues or leaks at all after replacing this hose, however I just had my
transmission solenoid pack fail, getting error codes P0760 and P0770 which
are both in the main solenoid pack. so I’ll be making a video tomorrow on
how to replace the transmission solenoid pack

Thanks a lot Link375! I am a noobie to DIY auto repair and maintenance. I
watched it and it seems a lot more simple than I thought. Just one
question…What is that white sealing tape called and where did you get it?

Kevin Burkhart says:

Good video and good advice. I am wondering if its a good idea to use the
teflon tape. I guess it did not hurt, but the o-rings are supposed to seal
the fittings. The noise heard at the end of the steering travel is normal,
all cars with power steering make noise when you hit the stop on either
side. IMHO, its best to avoid steering up against the stop, back off the
stop and steer a little wider. How is your steering after a couple months?
Leak free on the high pressure hose?

John Hitchins says:

Great video thanks, what an aweful design. No thought for maintenance. John

glad it helped you out, I just got this jeep and I’ve had to do a few
repairs on it, so there’s a few more videos coming on some of the common
issues I’ve ran into. remember to like or share the video so others can get
a chance to view it! thanks!

Hi..looking good..But your new hose requires that you remove the “adapter”
on the PS pump? My old one hose 5019708AB was leak and i order new one
5019708AE. only this pats selling. When i drive to service, our service man
can`t installed new hose, they tell me need new “adapter” on the pump. Hmmm
on your video you are used adapter or you not have in your old hose?
