Sam, you may look at using blocks of wood as safety back-ups to jack
stands.

aode06 says:

A few tips.
1.Don’t drain anything
2.Soak the pan bolts with PB blaster overnight.
3.Use a regular propane torch the next day, to heat the outside areas of
all bolts, including the drain and fill.
4.verify all break free .
5.remove the transmission line at the cooler.
6.run a rubber hose over it into your fill pan.
7.start up car, let it do the messy part for you, at the same time its
warming up.
8.Now that’s its warm and a whole lot of fluid drained, proceed to replace
the pan filter etc without all the mess.
9.Start up and refill, very easy.

Bless you, sir! I feel compelled to echo the respect and gratitude of the
many others who have been inspired by you! I’m curious, though – instead of
going through all the pain and effort of making sure you added the correct
amount of fluid, couldn’t you just measure how much you drained out and add
exactly that much new fluid back in? Assuming the transmission hadn’t been
leaking, of course.

zech007 says:

Before removing the drain plug, always remove the fill plug FIRST.

Aleksei Petrovski says:

1. Mess 2. When you unscrew pan, its good to do not allow stay it only on 1
screw (you can bent it)

great video mate, respect for giving this job a go yourself. im not quite
as confident as you so i think im probably going to have pay to have it done

jaybird124 says:

What color is the Mercon SP fluid?

sam1174 says:

Oh… and in regards to the fluid, I don’t recommend using just any fluid.
The ZF stuff and the Jaguar stuff is way too expensive. Ford uses this same
transmission in some of their vehicles, and they specify Mercon SP. That’s
what I used, and it worked great. Don’t get Mercon V, it’s not the same.
Get the Mercon SP. The only place to get it is the Ford dealer, and it’s
about $6 per quart.

94meriks says:

I have done the same on my BMW, and I’m totaly impressed you did it by
yourself AND record it on film also! Superhuman! 😀

BrentReyno says:

How is your transmission holding up 2 years later with Mercon SP?

T Smitty says:

ok thanks man ,by the way ,your vid was excellant.hands on man!! you taught
me a valuable lesson!!

jmoney219100 says:

u did a great job my s-type is almost the same except the drian plug is the
level check and fill up spot there is also another fill up spot but i did
about the same thing good idea with the infar red temp gun i like that

sam1174 says:

It’s on the side of the transmission housing, just above the exhaust pipe.
It’s hard to get to, and since you have to have the engine running while
adding fluid, you’ll definitely need some thick leather gloves.

BrentReyno says:

“without burning myself… Ah SHIT I burnt myself” haha. Cheers for the
video, I’ll be doing this in the next few weeks on my Ford Falcon. Very
helpful! Thanks!

brondon drapeau says:

@sam1174 cool thanks i just called jaguar they want 45 for a qt of their
oil i then called ford and asked the price of the mercon sp 4.99 a qt big
difference so im heading out and getting some how many qts did you use

teejaylentz says:

hahaha… this was awesome. I went through the EXACT same problems on my
BMW 7 series. The torx pan bolts stripped and are a real pain to get off
and the fill plug is also a pain to get off all the time thinking you are
going to strip it – especially getting it back in while you have fluid all
over the place… fun stuff… @2:58 made me laugh.

buffalobillgary says:

Hi Sam, bloody good video. Would you know if this proceedure would work for
my 1997 XK8 4.0L? Keep these type of videos coming, very interesting. Thank
you. Regards, Gary (UK)

jesuslopez559 says:

i have a 2003 s-type nd im having problems when i come to a stop then
accelerate it jerks on accerleracion could this be cause of the transmision
fluid?? thnx

sam1174 says:

The 97 transmission is slightly different. The filter is not integrated
into the pan as it is on the 2003+ models. That means you can replace it
without having to replace the pan. You still have to remove the pan,
though. The procedure is essentially the same.

Isley Rodriguez says:

Is the filler cap on the pan?

Ken Tyner says:

@sam1174 Thanks I’ll give that a try tommorow.
