In replacing the compressor will I need to flush AC system? I plan on trying to replace it myself if need be along with the drier and getting a seal & gasket set should I get anything else? On this 04 Vue Do you or can you give me advice on this and the procedure? I don’t have gauges or pump, refrigerant or recovery system. Thank you for your time! Mike
They told me compressor was running but not pulling freon into system, the seals in compressor are shot & will cost $7-800 to replace. I can’t afford that so I plan to do it myself. It looks as if I have to pull the engine to get compressor off,, is there a sealant that I could try first as a quick fix. If so how would I put in?
Hello Scotty, saw your video on replacing an AC Compressor. What kind of oil do you put in the new compressor before installation? My 2004 Saturn Vue has lost it’s cool, took it to local mechanic, freon was full registering at 70 on the machine gauge. They had me rev engine to 2k RPM & hold, they put fans in front of radiator, the gauge only down to around 60. (Continued next post)
compressors are very weak on those, remove the fan belt and run it, if the noise goes away, that’s it.
Hi Scotty. I just bought a used 2000 Expedition 4.6liter. I love the truck, but I noticed a rattling sound coming from the compressor (at least thats where it sounds like its coming from) when the ac is off. When I turn it on the rattling stops. The air still blows very cold, however, it sometimes feel colder than other times. Is this the compressor? Also, are there any pitfalls on these Fords that I should look for? Thanks in advance.
could be lots of things, but NEVER put sealer in that ac system it often clogs the expansion valve and the compressor on nissans.
Hey scotty i have a 300zx, They put refrigerent in it and stop leak and the air was back to not cold the next day, What do you think it could be? They say it might be the compressor.
should have battery power there, test the battery and if it’s like 12.5 volts or so, you should get near that at the compressor. Test it off the battery , and if it works, many guys will then run a toggle switch off the battery to run it.

i have a 98 tahoe 5.7L. the compressor wont engage, but it spins freely by hand. i check the voltage at the copmpressor plug with the AC on and off and both time it was around 50 mV. what should i check next? also, can i hook the compressor straight to battery power to test the compressor?
Man, did you get raped on that evap job. Last one I did on those was less than 500 bucks. Leave it alone as long as it blows cold, and if it lasts MANY months, heck, just refill it. And go somewhere else next time.
I just paid $1200.00 to have my evaporator replaced. At that time, the shop told me my conpressor was leaking but I could wait on that $500.00 repair. However, my air conditioner is cold when driving but is hot when the car is idling such as stopped at a red light. Should I invest another $500.00 in a 2007 Camry?

Sometimes that’s a blown AC compressor clutch, you could try just a new one. BUT me, I would change the whole compressor with a brand new chinese made unit, they cost less and work fine. Gambling with just the clutch on the compressor is often a losing proposition, it may not last long.
Hey thanks for your great video. I have a question on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma. I’m getting a grinding sound that appears to be coming from the a/c pump. It still turns (not seized up) but it doesn’t come on. The first I did was check the fuse (blown) replaced it and the light came on for a second and then went out…no a/c! The noise sounds like metal on metal (I’m assuming that’s not good). How would you proceed? Obviously money is extremely tight and if I can do it myself I will.

small knocks like that are often worn transmission or motor mounts, check that first. As for ac, tons of things can do that, start by checking the refrigerant level and PRAY it’s just low on gas.

In my 2003 lancer the ac works only half the time and sometimes it just stops blowing cold air (cooking me until I turn it off). Do you think its the ac clutch? Also, is it common to hear a very small knock when shifting gears? (Its a manual)

I have an 02 Mazda protege5 and my fan 1 doesn’t blow anything. Speed 2 and 3 blows warm air. And 4 does cold most if the time. The a/c light flickers and only turns on at 4. What can it be? The heater switch??

no, it often clogs stuff up and rarely fixes any leaks. NEVER use it on an expansion valve system, they will lock up.

Hey Scotty! Great vid! Quick question. My truck has a burning oil/plastic smell when my AC is on. And only when it is on. I think it may be the compressor, because a while back, I remember seeing what I thought was anti-freeze on the ground beneath my truck. However, my truck wasn’t overheating, so this leads me to believe that somehow the oil in my compressor got out. Does the AC compressor sound like the problem to you? Should I just replace it, or try to fix it?

saturns have high priced compressors, just the way it is. But heck, get an add kit at auto zone or somewhere, and add it yourself, each can is like 8 bucks. Thanks for making this easier to understand! My Saturn Vue -03 a/c stopped blowing cold 3 weeks ago. I toughed it out, then mother nature heated things up. Took it to a shop, was told the uv dye shows compressor leaking – they can’t add Freon – ozone layer contamination, etc. They say replace compressor – what do u think? My money tree is suffering from heat exhaustion n $800 bucks seems pricey
could be lots of things. Pressure test high and low sides at idle and 2000 rpms, e mail me the readings.
