+Xena Dobson I cannot reply to your comment (check your google+ settings)
so I hope you see this. First off, is there one belt (a serpentine belt) or
are there multiple belts? Second, what belt company are you using? Thrid,
you could have a pulley alignment issue or a pulley with a chip in; either
or causes the belt to wear quickly and then squeak and then if not fixed,
break. I would check all of your pulleys for chips or anything weird. What
does the broken belt look like (you can send me pictures on my Facebook
page: https://www.facebook.com/chrisfix8) and we can go from there. Please
reply to this comment so we can reply back to each other though this.

+Bridgette Vigil for some reason I cannot reply to your comment so I hope
you see this. If you dont fix the squeal then your belt or a pulley can
snap and cause your car to stop working while you are driving.

I replaced the idler pulley and it still squeaks. It stopped for about a
month though.

wb5mgr says:

As a side note once I purchased a ford truck that the previous owner had
allowed the belt to break on while in operation and pieces went everywhere
underneath the hood. The used vehicle dealer had replaced the belt prior to
sale, but an entire year later I ended up replacing the main engine crank
pully and harmonic balancer because a piece of the old belt that had fallen
down into the engine compartment worked its way behind the pully and caused
something to wear out prematurely where it began making a horrible noise.
The mechanic at the dealer found it when he pulled it off. A little piece
of rubber no larger than a sliver. Cost me hundreds of dollars!

Hey great video, quick question. Mine squeaks in the wet, and stops when I
put talcum powder on. Can you please explain to me why this might be a
problem and if I don’t get it sorted what will or can happen. Thank you.

Marky Marx says:

Great video. I think this maybe the cause of the problem I have on my
BMW 530i 2001. I replaced the serpentine belt at 60K miles and it now it
has 145k miles. The car is still awesome and runs great, it just makes a
howling / whirring noise when I start up and a more subtle whirring sound
when driving, almost like an electric motor. My new mechanic (I moved)
thinks it could be the power steering, but I think belt / or tensioner
pulleys. I also read that it could be the secondary air pump. Either way I
hope it is not too expensive!

Mr. Vega says:

I’ve been having this issue forever. Last year I finally ended up replacing
my alternator belt because it was so worn out and causing noise. I also
replaced the other one as well. The problem is that the noise goes away for
a month or two and then I have to retighten the pulleys because they make
that annoying squeal whenever I turn it on and then it goes away. It’s
embarrassing. Right now the noise has come back. I’m going to see if its
any of the pulleys. Also, I’m not really sure how tight they should be. I
just keep doing it till I turn the car on and it goes away.

Chevymalibuls says:

Hey bud. My Malibu has a god awful squeak In the morning and only goes away
when it gets hot. It didn’t start until I replaced the belt with a Dayco
belt. The pulleys are not out of alignment, but the power steering pulley
has a few chips knocked out of it. I sprayed the rib side of the belt and
it went away for a few seconds and came back worse. The belt is clean and
all pulleys are clean too. The tension is also good. The sound does come
from the power steering area, like when the belt comes up over the pulley.
Belts been on for over 4 months. Thanks a lot!!

Brian Galeano says:

glad i found this video, but quick question, i just changed my belt on my
93 jeep grand cherokee, and now it makes a squeaky noice, but only as i
accelerate and gets worst as i accelerate even more. i havnt gone out to my
car to check the issue yet as its raining, and i have no garage. but could
it be a bad tensioner?

Jason Combs says:

My car just started doing this this morning but it hasnt been started in
about 3 months and its been very cold , it goes away once the car heats up
could anyone give me ideas please

My car has been making a high pitched screeching noise for almost six
months now. I had my car serviced not long after the noise first started
and the mechanic changed the CV joints. But the noise still happens,
usually when I start my car (but not every single time) and it seems to get
louder when I accelerate or turn a corner. But it isn’t always noisy… And
it only last 20 seconds or so and then the noise is gone? It is so loud
though, very high pitched screeching. Is it weird that the mechanics didn’t
pick anything up when I had it serviced? I know, I know, I should get it
looked at. But I’m just scared they are going to slam me with a massive
bill… In the past 8 months I’ve had to replace the catalytic converter (I
think that’s what it’s called?) and the cv joints and it hasn’t been cheap.
My car is an automatic Suzuki Swift, 2007 model, done about 99,900
kilometres. Any ideas? Good video by the way 🙂

Very useful video thanks. Your thumb end joint is about an inch long, for
reference.

I love the presentation in this video. Simple, straight forward,
informative. Many videos are way to chatty. Well done!

Sorry that you have an explorer…. haha. I have had run out issues in the
harmonic balancer on a number of third gen explorers….. I assume that was
a second gen that you showed though.

wb5mgr says:

Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I drive more miles per year than most
people… But I’ve always just followed the rule that every two years I
change my belt and my hoses no matter what and take the old ones and put
them in my truckbox in a garbage bag. That way if I ever lose a hose or
belt on the road I have a hot spare in my truck ready to go. Of course I
also keep a couple of gallons of coolant and some oil, trans and brake
fluid plus a tool kit… Guess never having owned a new car and always
working on my own stuff just got me to being a little over prepared…

Nicole Wiercinski says:

Hi Chris! Hoping you can give me a little insight! I have watched your
video and taken my car to Toyota directly as I needed some recall issues
fixed on my 2009 Toyota Corolla LE. I have very bad squealing issues with
my car when it’s a cold start or idle for some time. After I drive it for a
few minutes, the car warms up and the squealing stops. Even if I park it
for an hour or so, it doesn’t start again. It will only act up after
sitting idle again for a few hours. I took it to Toyota and they heard it
and told me I probably needed a new belt since Firestone changed my first
one and it probably wasn’t the right belt. They called me later and told me
I had a tension chain leak and they needed to fix that as well and both of
those were probably causing this issue. I did have some other work done
($900 in total) but low and behold, the issue is STILL there. in fact it
sounds a little worse. Could you give me any insight if you think this is a
misalignment or a pulley issue?? I want to be knowledgeable to maybe do
this myself. I am so upset that they had my car for the whole day and
DIDN’T fix this issue at all. Clearly, they didn’t look into it correctly.
Shame on these dealer mechanics!!!

My ludes belt squeals like a pig in the West Virginia Mountains…

Craig Schneider says:

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT that has been make a squeaking noise for a
while. We’ve replaced the idler pulley and the belt, and the squeak keeps
coming back. I had someone else look at it, and he said the Water Pump is
doing the squealing because the bearings are loose. He says a water pump
replacement will fix it. He also said the tensioner pulley is rough and
needs replaced. What are your thoughts on this? It will be about $400-500
to fix according to this diagnosis, and I want to be sure that this would
do the trick before I put that kind of $$ into this. Thank you!

As a first time car owner, this was easy to understand and SUPER helpful!
