Hyundai Ioniq 5 | How to Install a Trailer Hitch by Torklift Central

Hyundai Ioniq 5 | How to Install a Trailer Hitch by Torklift Central

This video if for all of you brave enough to attempt installing your Torklift 2″ trailer hitch yourself. This is a 7/8 out of 10. It took me around 2.5 – 3 hours so set aside some time to do this. Getting the rear bumper off was quite challenging and Torklift’s instructions left out some pretty key steps to be able to get the bumper off without damaging it. I would suggest watching this all the way through to make sure you don’t miss those critical steps.

**It just came to light that Torklift Central’s installation instructions were incorrect in regard to the torque spec for bolting to receiver to the frame. instead of 50 ft-lbs, they should be torqued to 68 ft-lbs.**

Torklift Central says:

Thank you so much for sharing your install! The hitch looks great and your video is extremely thorough!

V Von says:

This is hard to watch, but easier than the difficulty you had pulling this off! LOL …GREAT JOB, very clear, clean and instructive! Have you ever heard of anyone doing a Lift-Kit on an ionic yet. I'd be very interested if you know a link? Or maybe you'd like to raise your car yourself????

Darren Clayton says:

After a recent rear impact one of my reversing sensors has been pushed back into the bumper. I think I may need to release at least part of the bumper in order to get access to push the sensor back into place (I can’t think of a way to do it from the front), so this video is a very helpful guide on what to expect. Thanks.

Jenner says:

Nice work! Btw Mr. Ioniq I would love to see an upgrade on your rims too

bitblt says:

Really good install video! It gives me the confidence to attempt the install on MY Ioniq 5. And hopefully it helps Torklift Central improve their install instructions too

Al Key Hol says:

Just did the Install your DIY was super helpful. Only thing to add was there are two very very hard to see and get to platic rivet nuts in the middle section top part of the bumper where you encountered the busted tabs. I was able to take it out, post install of the hitch, there was not enough room to actually reach back up to install those 2 rivet nuts, meaning even if you broke them it didnt matter as you couldn't put them back on anyways! Great video how to and great product from torklift!

Ricardo Jose says:

If you use it for the bike rack only, do you need to put the car in trailer mode?

Al Key Hol says:

Just picked up one from TorkLift Central – def credit to the Ioniq guy for the purchase!

Fredrick Hight says:

Thanks for this video! I'm wanting mine for a EV bike and small boat. Subscribed. New Ionic next week Lord willing!

Robert Minkema says:

Thanks for the help with the trailer hitch, no way I would tried with out watching the video multiple times. The is now a You Haul video witch helps as well. Thanks again

Al Key Hol says:

Awesome found the video!

amigajoe says:

I remember now, I started to watch this video a while back and I think I stopped when you got to the part about cutting the bumper. It looks really good when it’s all done though, but I still don’t know how I feel about cutting the bumper. I sure thought that I’ve seen pictures of the official Hyundai hitch and it does not involve cutting the bumper, just the panel underneath. Do you know anything about that?

J Jones says:

With Bike rack/ bikes installed did you need to adjust the settings for backup sensors? I have a hitch in transit. Looking forward to taking my bikes to the coast.

Branden Flasch says:

This looks so much better than the optional Hyundai accessory.

Branden Flasch says:

Wow, this looks significantly more annoying than the ID.4 hitch install I did.

Banzai Badger says:

Might want to re-edit your video and blur your license plate

Dan Dalmeida says:

Hey what pressure is needed to get the connector off on the center of the metal bumper under the plastic fascia/bumper?

Mistermatt1984 says:

I'm torn.. 1 1/4" vs 2" means I could use my euro style receiver again..

Aaron S says:

I was able to install this without removing the bumper. There is one tricky screw to remove the center bumper brace, but otherwise not bad. Also you can reduce the cut height to about 2.5" for much less of a gap. And the wider cut really only needs to cut on the under side, barely up the rearward facing surface at all.

Robert Lachance says:

drawtight now makes a custom hitch for the ioniq5 that is not stainless steel, but is also $225.

Tyler Harvey says:

Thanks for the great video! Hitch installation is also a great time to replace rear back-up lamps with LEDs if you don't have the top trim, as those also require taking off the bumper.

Element One15 says:

You are brave and turned out amazing!

Antonio Valles says:

Is there a link to the Ecohitch instructions?

Samuel Ahn says:

Thanks to Ioniq Guy for posting this video. I recently installed a Stealth Hitch on my Ioniq 5. I watched Ioniq Guy's video and looked at Stealth Hitch pictorial instructions which I found to be comprehensive and excellent. The most important part is to start removing the bumper from the bottom tab and NOT starting from the top. Initially I started from the top like Ioniq Guy and struggled to release even one tab. Then I looked again at the Stealth Hitch instructions which indicate starting at the bottom. Huge difference. Also, Ionig Guy fails to remove the two standard body clips attaching the bumper to plastic body supports. They are detailed in the Stealth Hitch instructions. Ioniq Guy breaks these off in his video and says at the 6:30min mark "its pretty easy to pop the center clips you'll hear some plastic chunks of plastic fall down because I don't think these bumpers were meant to be taken off and put back on". By following the Stealth Hitch instructions, it's possible to remove the bumper without breaking anything off. In addition, you can reinstall these two clips which will make the bumper more securely fastened after installing the hitch. You can easily find the well done, detailed instructions with pics on their website.

Kyle Raine says:

Installed my Stealth hitch today. Note when pulling bumper off near the sides next to the wheels start at the bottom. It goes much easier. Also, under the color bumper there is a black mounting bracket. Leave the bracket there. Just removed the colored bumper.

StoweHiker says:

Thanks for the great video! I couldn't have done the installation without it.

One tip: when removing the forward ends of the bumper cover, I inserted a flat-blade screwdriver with a long, thick shaft downward between the edge of the bumper cover and the black plastic that stays with the car (about where your right index finger is at time 5:11). I went down about an inch and pried the cover out, then down another inch and pried again, and so on. At some point it is better to pry by pushing the screwdriver handle toward the car, rather than away. At the same time I was also using a plastic pry tool along the forward edge to coax the cover to pop off. The result was a trauma-free removal of the cover, with no broken plastic bits.

garethw001 says:

I installed mine yesterday afternoon. I read a few others commenting that they did it without taking the bumper off so decided to attempt this. For those wondering you will have to pull back the fabric/plastic trim around the wheel wells to get access to the mounting holes, but on the whole it was fairly straight forward. I didn't have any issue cutting the bumper while still on the car although my cuts could have been cleaner, oh well can't really see it unless you get down on the ground to look. I'm disappointed that for $400+ they didn't throw in a $5 rubber cap, missed opportunity for Torklift to get some free advertising by slapping their logo on a cover!
