the person who have designed this break light housing is such a fuckin baster. it is not removable I think removing the engine is easier than this.

Doesn’t make sense to drill in side the car, our car is much to nice, after I got my light out I drilled a 1 1/2 hole inside the truck right below the socket. can’t even see it unless your laying on your back in the truck. now, 1 minute fix with out tools. I put black duck tape over it so it blends in with rest the truck. most holes are taped from the factory.

Just got it out after 2 hours. What a pain in the ass! Thanks for the tips below, would have never figured it out. Would have been smart if Hyundai put a 2″ center bore hole in the trunk framing to change the bulb. You need to remove 2 phillips head screws underneath in the trunk, then use a long standard screwdriver to pry the 3 back plastic clips, keep pushing up on the inner housing to loosen it from the rear deck. Then keep working at it from the backseat until it finally comes out.

There are 2 screws under the rear deck directly underneath the light housing. One holds the wiring together and the other is obscured by a sticky pad of fabric in a hole to the right. EASY. The Housing will come right out. Turn the part that holds the light with a screwdriver.

Is the next PSA going to be “Don’t clutter your garage full of junk like I did or you’ll end up on hoarders”??

Nightbird says:

So your putting down Hyundai because of lights? Give me a break! Go take a look at Honda’s warranty and then look at Hyundai’s. All cars break down and have problems with time..but at least with Hyundai your covered for 100k miles or 10yrs -best warranty in the car business. And your right..Hyundai’s are not as smooth as Honda & Toyota..but they ARE a better value for the money according to car experts.

Peter Hallam says:

Please don’t butcher your rear deck.
Locate the two golden colored philips screws under the light from the truck.
One of the screw access holes is covered with foam insulation, pock it back with your finger. Push the brake light housing up to release it . From the truck dismount the plastic socket that holds the bulb. Remove bulb from truck side. Remove housing from back seat. Bulbs are $2. Reduce the socket length to where the wires enter. Once shortened you can reassemble from back set.

i just did mine 11/28/11 .did not drill out, took out the bottom screws, which i did not replace, snapped out the housing, difficult with the bulb holder, which i sawed offf the bottom of the bulb holder, and the housing snapped back in again did not replace the bottom screws again,if i have have to replace the bulb again ,its easier, the local Hyundai dealership wanted $84 to replace the warranty,as bulbs come in a two pack ,it will be easy to replace next time

I have a 2006 Sonota GLS with 52,000 miles on it. I have repalce both brake lights left one twice and now the High Mounted Rear Stop Light is out. I have a 2004 Honda Accord LX with 113500 miles and have replace one light bulb. The High Mounted Rear Stop Light. Took me five min. I am buying another Honda Accord next month. Not another Hyundai. The drivers sun visor on the 06 Sonota has been replace once and is broke again. The Hyundia and Honda are not even in the same class.

Thanks for this video, As I had to pay Hyundai 2x to replace the bulb and bring it back a 3rd time because the bulb came loose…I’m going to try this and see if I can do this myself…Thanks again.

studpuppy69 says:

I had used Liquid Nails when I used a cheap LED but wasn’t satisfied with it because it was to dim. All I did was twist the base from the housing and it came loose. Maybe Liquid Nails does not bond well to plastic, but bonds good enough to hold strong. It’s an LED so it shouldn’t burn out hopefully for the life of the car.

rodneydebaris says:

No need to drill a hole to change the light. I just changed mine by lifting up the light cover with a screwdriver then replaced the bulb. How are you going to change the bulb the next time it burns out? You used Liquid Nails that could be a big problem the next time you have to change it again.

studpuppy69 says:

Nope. I used a flat head screw driver, pried it up from inside breaking the clips. Got the bulb out and had to snap the plastic tabs off to get it in, then had to drill a small hole to get it in and use liquid nails to hold it in place. Done deal.
