Bertminator says:

It already has…thanks a million

727JeffN says:

Oh geeze! I don’t even remember now. Seems like around 1/2 inch. It’s been
2 years since I did this job! (astrosafari727 here.)

vidtravl says:

Nice video, but I notice you changed the power window motor without
removing the regulator first. All experts I have encountered say that this
is dangerous and the correct way is to remove the regulator, lock the
sector gear to the backing plate, replace the motor, and then reinstall the
regulator. Did you somehow lock this gear to prevent the counterbalance
spring from unwinding and I just missed that step in your video?

DrHarleyWilson says:

Very helpful. Appreciate you taking the time to provide those instructions.
I don’t know what the deal is with the regulator so I’m just going to
follow your suggestions and hope it works. If it doesn’t, I have mechanic
who can fix it. Anyway, nice work.

chevyman5436 says:

Thanks! The window motor on my ’95 Firebird V8 went out and does the same
thing yours did at the begining of the video. Found a Safari at a junk yard
and found the window motors are the same for the two vehicles. Any
difficulty drilling the rivets out? Anything I should look out for? I’m
headed down there tomorrow cause it’s 19 degrees out today.

aksrtjeep says:

Thanks for the post. I changed my motor today and with your help it was a
breeze! I only broke 2 clips! I took your advise and used self tapping
screws instead of the ones that came with it. Thanks again!

727JeffN says:

@rumtum4485 I tried to, but it didn’t turn out. It is very hard to replace
that door handle. Turns out mine had part of the spring sticking out just
enough that it kept me from getting it out of the door. By then, I didn’t
care about making a video.

astrosafari727 says:

@SunnyCosign I don’t know if you could hammer them out or not. My advise
would be to get a drill. The motor & window are still working fine.

TomProctor75 says:

I just replaced a window motor in a ’97 Astro, and this video was a big
help. Thanks!

Peter Regan says:

Thanks for the post. It will be a big help!

1skippyman says:

I want to thank you for this post.I had do replace the motor in my 99
Astro, and my guess is you saved me several hours of ficguring out what to
do.Paid $36.00 for a new motor unit, and saved at least $300.00 more in
labor.Tape the window up like you posted is the way to do it.Mine had
screws holding it in,and I used 5/32 pop rivets to install the new
one. There was nothing dangerous about it.

727JeffN says:

There was nobody else around. And it was not possible to film everything.
The electrical connections just plug and unplug. I’m sorry I didn’t make a
perfect video for you.

aode06 says:

NICE, btw thats not duck tape, thats packaging tape

727JeffN says:

Astrosafari727 here. This is a ’97 Safari. Thanks for watching, and I’m
glad I could help.

Robert Murdock says:

Thank you for the effort, but get someone to hold the camera while you do
the work. Please show how you worked out the panel, what drill size for the
rivets, how you disconnected the electrical connections, how you reconnect
the motor. All these important steps you gloss over.

Bertminator says:

Thank you for the speedy reply…lol..sorry to put you on the spot

PMWhoKnows says:

Drivers side window goes up to a point and then it sounds like a gear
jumping. If you grab the window and pull it up a bit while holding the
switch then it goes all the way up. Down is the same problem in reverse,
stops at the same point and then you give it a push and it tracks down just
fine Any ideas on what the course of action is, 1999 Chevy Astro Thanks

727JeffN says:

@vidtravl You don’t have to take the regulator out.

chevyman5436 says:

@727JeffN Alrighty. Thanks! I’ll have yet to find out about the mounting in
the Firebird but I’ll make it work. Thanks again!

astrosafari727 says:

Hmmm. Interesting! Maybe I’ll try that when it goes bad again. Showing
signs of doing just that!

727JeffN says:

@chevyman5436 (Astrosafari727 here) Didn’t have any problem drilling the
rivets out. They came right out. Just couldn’t hold the camera and do it at
the same time. Yes, the motors are the same as the Camaros and Firebirds.
But I don’t know how they are mounted in those cars.

astrosafari727 says:

No, it is yellow duct tape. It is not packaging tape.

Bertminator says:

Thanks for posting, I’m faced with this job tomrrow. What length machine
screws did you use?

rumtum4485 says:

very helpful! thanks.. i only wish you had filmed the replacement of the
door handle .. i need to do the same and am a bit lost ..

A Pulis says:

Great video. Saves me a great deal of time. Great job THANKS.

727JeffN says:

@1skippyman You’re welcome. It sounds like your motor was replaced one time
before.

727JeffN says:

Did you have to replace one of these?

aracer01 says:

Tape the shaft of the long bit to protect the plastic. I will post a
picture if allowed.

astrosafari727 says:

You’re welcome! Glad I could help.

aode06 says:

oh ok, i found some at family dollar. Also , I have found the Original
motors from GM work best.

astrosafari727 says:

Sounds like the window is loose in the track, or might just need some
grease.

727JeffN says:

That’s OK. Thanks for watching, and I hope this will help.

aracer01 says:

The window motor is replaced without removing the entire door panel by
using the switch and tweeter panel. You simply drill out the rivets. The
one that is on the bottom will need a LONG drill bit. Then you drill out
the other 3 holes to 3/16 and pop rivet the motor in, leaving out the
bottom rivet, you may use a sheet metal screw, and because the new rivets
are bigger and the gun will not fit, just leave out the 4th rivet. You
don’t even need to undo, any other wire except the motor. Me smart
