Will This Tired GM Diesel Run Again? 1940 4-71 Detroit Diesel

Well this was supposed to be a short video!
This worn out GM Diesel was built in September 1940 and has had a long hard life since then. Many components have been swapped out over the years.

One of the most dependable engines made.I've worked on a lot of the 71 and 92 series. They love starting fluid when they get tired.Good video

Graham Shea says:

I would love to see a series on the rebuild of this engine.

drdrums1 says:

I'd love to see what that engine could do with a full rebuild! I'm guessing it'll probably need new cylinder liners/pistons/rings, in addition to the crank grind and oversized bearings. I take it those old engines didn't have glow plugs, hence the need for the torch in the intake.

So those are both exhaust valves? 2 stroke huh… haha mildly confused I think I get the general principle where’s the air hole tho… cylinder wall still?

Gary Mucher says:

Well it looks like you got the engine running AND sprayed for mosquitoes at the same time. How can you not like that ?

Any news on that old forgotten Onan engine that was in the bushes?

Richard Phelan says:

It's a Jimmy of course it will run awesome 2 cycle engine they made a gazillion of them and put them in everything .2-71,4-71,6-71 great motors , for safety sake change out the Blower seals on a older motor is the smart thing to do the will suck engine oil out of the pan and run on that ,Yes you guessed it a Jimmy run away and they will scream. I sent a copy of this video to my friend who had a Allis Chalmers HD9 with a 4-71 so he can do a proper injector tune on his ,that Dozer sounds sweet wound up in the woods when he's logging .
