Possibly your gears are worn or broken on the tilt mechanism. My column is
still tight.
It’s not illegal. You can remove it at your OWN risk.
@mrnockers i meant steering wheel nut . ooops.
@only4freaks (dumb question) are you using a steering wheel puller or just
pulling with your hands? I have worked on the Nissan Sentra aka “Nissan
Sunny” But I’m unfamiliar with the steering column. make sure the clips are
removed, I’ll send some links I can’t really help you out sorry,
ok i have a 1987 chevy v10 v6 4.3 liter i got everything off but when i
come to put pressure on it to get that ring off i cant get it off what kind
off tool would i need
I’ll remember that next time thanks
somebody please help me… I own a nissan sunny 130y 1982 model, and i have
difficulties on removing my original steering… even if i unscrew all the
parts and remove the big nut at the center, i still cant get the steering
off. is it because of rusting or dust or something???? please help….
thanks to the vid, i figured out how the steering lock works!!!
@photographermatt i bought a steering column from a guy and he took the
ignition out and when i put the ignition in with the column still all
assembled the ignition wont go to the ‘OFF” position
No.
Nah, its 4 bolts in the middle of the steering column underneath the tilt
mechanism. They work their way out over time and cause the whole column to
shift about. cheap fix, but a friggin pain to get to.
poor buddy. i know how it feels to do this work. im doing it to my 84 chevy
right now
Do i need to do all this in order to just put a small aftermarket racing
steering wheel on my 94 gmc pickup?? Get back intouch asap
@97warlock I sent you a few links
@nothadnotbad you have a nice truck
this jeep right???old one?
@theHippy86 i’m doing the same on a ’79. it looks like he just unscrewed
something, then pushed the lock plate in, then pulled off the c – ring
which is the part that retains the lock cyclinder. there is a GM lock plate
removal kit you can buy, if you are in the US you can get this from
autozone apparently. this basically screws on to the bolt in the middle of
the steering wheel and pushing the plate back so you can undo the C clip.
let me know how you get on.
This set up is exactly what I need to do! So I will need a puller ? I seen
what is broken in mine as I watched you. Signal* and might as well replace
other parts while I am in there! (that little brass clip- needs special
twizers? (84 dodge van)
i pulled a steering wheel on a 77 the other day, i just soaked it with
penatrating oil, pulled on the wheel and wacked the column shaft with a
hammer and it poped right off. next i gotta pull the darn lock plate. any
tips?
I found it help to number each piece as I took it off for reassembly your
video is great it did help me find the spring and where it went.
Thank You – jasco927 That was probably the part where my camera crapped out
& I used a steering wheel lock tool & flat screwdriver, needle nose pliers
long – for that part
Illegal or Not — you may not pass inspection if the airbag is removed so
definitely ((AT YOUR OWN RISK))
GM has the worst car components design
i have it taken apart up to the lock plate, it is under heavy spring
tension and i am having trouble trying to push it down to remove the clip,
any suggestions on how to do that?
Does anyone know how to remove the steering column on a 1982 chevy workvan?
Sorry but it is illegal in all 50 states to remove your airbag –
@only4freaks yeah use a puller and it shouldn’t be rusty since it’s inside
the car lol if it is rusted or stuck, spray it with some good penetrating
oil and let it set a few hours.
@Thesuperhappyfuntime I made my own tool using an old 1-1/4hole saw , i cut
two windows on the side of it so you can reach the lock clip. .it fits
right over the shaft and then use the original steering wheel bolt to turn
it down , it pushes the assembly down and takes pressure off the clip and
you can then unhook the clip from the shaft through the cut out windows, to
install just reverse the order . cheap and easy .
I have a question. If I have a car with an airbag and want to put a sport
steering wheel, is it illegal?
Thanx Dude
@lastpatriot4america unless he’s the hulk the he must’ve already removed
the stop ring that holds the pressure plate back. You need a steering wheel
lock plate tool in order to push the plate down enough to remove the o-ring
that sits in the stop groove. This will be the hardest part o the job but
with a flat head and some needle nose pliers you should be good to go. Hope
this helps.
Thanks for this! I had mine taken apart in my ’89 Buick Lesabre (identical)
and I forgot which way that tabbed bowl piece went in on the
shaft…..looks like tabs down over the outer race for the outer ball
bearing. Makes sense being that it helps it seat evenly. My wheel wasn’t
solid at all before but it is now!!
I am right in the middle of doing this to my ’89 Silverado. This is very
helpful to me since the manual I have ordered (and which was supposed to
have shipped a week ago…) hasn’t arrived yet. I guess I should return my
rented/borrowed steering wheel puller to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and see if
they have the lock ring remover/installer tool available. Thanks for
posting this great info. It has helped me a lot!
Question. I am at the lock plate. What screw didi you loosen to get it off ?
has anyone tried installing the lock plate with out the tool? i dont feeel
like speending 50 bucks to rent the tool. any suggestionstips
just took the tumbler out of the exact same truck… went to put the new
one in and it would only go to accesorys and off… any idea why it won’t
start? does the steering wheel have to be back on ? what does the torx
screw do thats behind the turn signal switch does it hold the tumbler in?
is there any trick to installing the the new tumbler ?
i had a question about 2:42 – 2:50 , i am trying to change the ignition
lock on an 1987 Chevy S10 pickup and I cannot get past that ear-ring washer
(not sure what its really called) i see that its on very tightly and then
you loosen a bolt and it comes right off, did you do anything else- what
can I use to remove that?
i just got a ticket saying my car is “unsafe to drive” saying it is at your
own risk is wrong if the cop wants to be a dick you have to have a airbag
in your steering wheel no doubt about it!!!!!
i rofled at 0:57 lol
photographermatt you could have removed the turn signal wiring down in the
column, that would made it easy to remove the turnsignal switch
@theHippy86 Thanks buddy, i couldn’t get hold of a lock plate compressor
here so i applied pressure evenly and it managed to catch something so i
was able to quickly pry out the C ring with a flathead screwdriver and slip
it off. i think a lock plate compressor will help reinstallation to make it
a breeze, but it is possible with a bit of strength and patience. mine has
had it’s 1 year resto now, ready for the road soon 🙂 good luck with yours!
I see you edited out the lock plate removal. If your experience with it was
anything like mine I can see why!…X rated material!… “contains extreme
violence and strong language” XD
@rayray123ray69 i think he unscrewed the turn signal lever but you dont
need to do that. i took the lock plate off the other day, it wasnt nearly
as hard as i tought it was going to be. i probably wont be puting it back
together till next year though. im doing a frame off resto on a time budget
of a few hours a week
I had to make a stop at AAP and pick up a Specialty tool yep swearing
involved edit 🙂 LOL
what are u unscrewing at 2:39 thats what i need to find to get the cog
looking thing off my 1988 dodge dakota
what happens If you don’t have a pull? will you not be able to get it off?
Thanks for the Vid. I can use this to help me reassemble the column in my
Wagoneer. Does your column feel loose around the tilt mechanism?
