One Way To Deal With GM's Oil Burning AFM Junk

One Way To Deal With GM's Oil Burning AFM Junk

Anyone who has owned a GM with the infamous “AFM” or “active fuel management engine” knows how big of a fumble the government bailed out automaker made coming up with this mess. From lifters that break to cams that get wiped out to the 5qts of oil they will burn between changes, there is no end to the list of problems these engine have. Here in the PRNY (Peoples Republic Of NY) or anywhere in the rust belt the only thing that wears out faster than the AFM engines in these GMT900 series trucks is the frame. On a quiet night around here you can listen to the frame rotting away. So with that being said customers in these parts rarely want to fix these oil guzzlers when they come in with one of the AFM cylinders sucking so much oil it fouls out a spark plug and causes a misfire with a flashing engine light. So in this video I show you a common practice around our shop to keep these junkers going while they are waiting for the frame to rot away. Oh and don’t take my word for it that the AFM engines are a disaster, just Google “Problems with AFM engines” and pull up a chair.

Mark Vanderberg says:

2013 was the first year for the 5.3 L GEN V engine, I was part of a team who started production in 2012 for the piston's. It was a whole new design much more complicated than the previous generation which was a flat top with cast valve pockets. When I purchased my new Silverado near the end of 2012 I had the option of getting the 2013 with the GEN V. I told the salesman no way in hell, I'm working on that project and were still learning how to produce a good part. They've moved all that piston production now to Mexico and the quality standards are even more open. Just for your information!!!

I had 2 of these pieces of junk, chevy you really screwed this up.i won't buy another gm product again. Got a Toyota Tacoma now, almost 300,000 on it no problems at all. Just maintain very well.

porcelain is great for a cylinder.

MikeysHouseofBrakes says:

Put in a Range to disable the AFM system. It will remain firing on all cylinders all the time.

Around here cars don't rust out in 10 years. So we drive GMT800's back before GM started using all that AFM garbage.

I’ve driven Toyota trucks for 25 years, have over 600,000 combined miles and have never repaired one.

vilefly says:

Here's my issue with the EPA: If the engine modifications for gas mileage make the engine burn oil and kill catalytic converters, it should be goddamned illegal. Today's thinner piston rings, by that reckoning should be illegal. They are so very short sighted, it's ridiculous. The newer the vehicle, the more oil it burns. Completely backwards.

mc2whls says:

I had a Turbocharged 2.3 Liter Mustang. It fouled #3 spark plug often due to oil burning. When it misfired, I'd change #3 spark plug. Fixed. Temporarily. Next time #3 fouled, I'd change all 4 spark plugs. Keep the spark plugs from 1,2 and 4. They were used to fix misfire of #3. It used 1 quart of engine oil every 300 miles. This happened at 18,000 miles but I drove it until it had about 73,000 miles on it. Donated it to Goodwill.

Dennis Bailey says:

Just wondering if anybody's had transmission difficulties with these trucks with the 5.3 with the automatics making a big clunking hard shift noise under light acceleration in most gears?

Dennis Bailey says:

Is there a way to delay the difficulties of camshaft problems in those 5.3 motors?
Maybe super frequent oil changes?

Rock Newton Filsterwilly says:

Growing up in the car business I remember when GM didn't stand for Gruberment Motors and they actually dominated the market. I haven't owned a chevy for 23 years, the last one was a new Cadillac given to me by the inlaws. After the steering column caught fire I got rid of it. $1,500 shock absorbers…. the list goes on.
