HOW TO: GM Truck Heater Core

Instructions on replacing a heater core in a Chevy or GMC k1500. This was done on a 1997 GMC K1500.

my 94 gmc surburban heater does NOT get hot or warm, it blows cold/cool
air. just replaced the thermostat, do i need to change the heater core
also??

it most likely has some kinda leak some where along the way or the blower
is shot ,, its a cheep part but a leak is a pain

hi i was wondering if you might know where the hose that dos not come off
the water pump leads to or is located when it comes off the heater core .
bought a truck and dos not have the heater core hooked up i know where the
one comeing from the water pump is but have no clue where the other is ..

@starvengers67 This usually means the drain hole/tube in the bottom of the
unit is plugged. The drain allows condensation to go out on the ground ie:
when a/c unit freezes then thaws. If the drain gets plugged it will
accumulate in the blower housing.

Where’s the blower and the housing around the heater core? I think you are
making it look one helluva lot easier than it really is………

@whitwellhigh Sorry I can’t remember exactly how many bolts were on the
cover, and I would check for you but I don’t have the truck anymore. I do
remember there being one bolt that was impossible to see and tricky to find
roughly centered on the cover close to the firewall. Also, I think the
cover kind of snaps in so I had to give it a bit of a yank once all the
bolts were out.

Did you have a dripping out of the cab to the road when you parked? My
truck is loosing coolant by the driver door’s front fender and I’m sure
it’s the Heater Core. No heat what so ever.

Do you need to drain the fluid from the radiator first? I have a heater
that doesn’t heat very well, and I’m assuming it’s probably the thermostat,
heater core, or fan clutch. I want to check to see if the heater core is
clogged, but if you need to drain the radiator first I might as well go
ahead and change the thermostat because they’re so cheap.

@pensandcalls nope it was dead easy on my 97 k1500 took about an hour and a
half and it was my first time doing a heater core. Could be harder on
different vehicles though I have heard horror stories of removing the
entire dash to get at the heater core

it some shops wanted over $1000!! I figured I should share the easy way so
hopefully less people will get ripped off.

Great video would this be similar on a 1999 Tahoe? I started leaking a
small amount of coolant into the passenger floor area.

It was a bit tricky mostly because you can’t see the bolts, so its just a
bit of a pain feeling around back there to find them and get your tools
lined up. You’ll need to pull your carpet back a bit which may involve
taking off the plastic trim panel to the right of where the passengers feet
would be. But its still waaaayy quicker/easier/cheaper than taking the
whole dash out.

I have a 1995 Silverado Z71 (K1500)…and it has the same heater core
setup….Yep. Autozone and the Repair manual even says to take out the dash
LOL….Thats crazy LOL….Anyways, I removed all the bolts i could see but
still felt like there was another one I had not removed …but your
correct…the heater core was right there…..Just waiting to be replaced
:)…Mine turned out to be good 🙂 How many bolts were there total in this?
