HOW TO PULL YOUR OWN PARTS AT A SALVAGE YARD AND SAVE MONEY while keeping your vehicle on the road! How to remove the alternator from a 2000-2005 Chevy Impala. This process is the same on the list of GM vehicles listed below as well as the tools needed and instructional steps.
All vehicles equipped with the 3400 V6 Engine:
1996 Chevrolet Lumina APV
1997-2005 Chevrolet Venture
1996-2004 Oldsmobile Silhouette
1996-1998 Pontiac Trans Sport
1999-2005 Pontiac Montana
1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero
1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am
2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala
2000-2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
2001-2005 Pontiac Aztek
2002-2005 Buick Rendezvous
TOOLS NEEDED FOR THIS JOB:
10mm socket
13mm socket
15mm socket
3/8 ratchet
3/8 various length extensions
1/4 ratchet
3/8 breaker bar might also be handy
Part Pull Tip:
Using a 3/8 breaker bar vs a 3/8 ratchet to pull and release the tension of the belt tensionor to remove the belt will alow for better leverage although the 3/8 ratchet will also work.
REMOVAL:
1. Remove the belt by inserting a 3/8 inch ratchet or breaker bar into the square hole on the front of the belt tensioner, pulling against the spring tension then remove the belt.
2. Remove both 15mm bolts on the back side of the alternator.
3. Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold down the overflow jug and remove the jug in order to remove the front 15mm bolt on the
alternator. (this is for 2000-2005 Impala only)
4. Remove the 15mm bolt on the front side of the alternator.
5. Remove the main power plug by lifting the tab on the plug and
pulling the plug.
REPLACE: Follow the steps above in reverse.
