Hey if I try to start my car why does my starter stay engaged as if I'm cranking my car even if it's running unless I'm in gear but park and neutral it acts like I'm still cranking it

Having an issue with my99 f150 5.4 i turn the key to accessory mode and it starts it up . Truck sounds rough like the starter is engaging continuously. Any hunch as to what it could be?

do u know if it works the same way on a 2000 Deville? im having this same problem with my Cadillac, my key broke off in the ignition & my car was stuck in drive after a accident, a hose bent & was prevented it from going into park, i moved the hose & finally got it in park manually which in my head (nothing got damaged that would prevent it from starting) so soon as i got in in park i took the broke key out cause it came out with ease & tried to put my key in & it wouldn't go in, now i finally got the key in the ignition & it wont move smh i just want to see if my car will crank & start before i start replacing parts, once i know it will start i can then begin my journey on bringing it back to life, main damage is my thermostat housing, fans, radiator, front bumper, hood, fender, head light & windshield lol that's why i need to get it to at least start & run before i start replacing anything cause all those parts are expensive

Have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT. It was broken into recently, and they broke off my ignition cylinder.
Tried this, but it still doesnt start. Key is in the ignition (albeit only like, the tip) and I turned it as shown. It cranks, but doesnt start.
Could I just be doing something wrong? Maybe it doesnt recognize my key anymore.
