If you can remove the door panel, you should be able to reach inside the door and unlock it by pulling on one of the rods. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
please help someone, my passenger door on my 2002 zx3( same model as shown here) wont open from the inside OR outside. I want to do the job myself but it seems impossible without opening the door, which as I said won’t work. I was considering drilling a hole through the inside frame to get to the lock mechanism. I don’t mind hacing a fist sized hole as long as the door works. any thoughts?
Unfortunately if the vehicle is in an accident and the handle is not working, it is a safety issue as you can get stuck in the vehicle if it is in a front end collision that disconnects the battery to roll the window down.
it is not a safety issue. it is convenience. the handle not working is not going to cause injury to you…………

I have a 2003 ford focus…every outside door handle is now broken. I really think ford should have had a recall on this. It is a safety issue. They started to break after owning it for three years. Now all four doors cannot be opened from the outside amazing. Other wise I like the car. I purchased it brand new and then gave it to my son when it was six years old
The locks on the ford focus are the worst part of the whole car!! Passenger side back seat wont open from inside and now the drivers side door wont open from the outside lol. Was hoping to see what the mechanism inside the door panel is supposed to look like or how to repair it since this seems to be a common problem. Guess I’ll just rip into it and hope for the best.
Normally when the handle does not open from the outside, you will have to replace the outside handle. There are some small clips that break that hold the rod to the handle itself.
I have a 2003 Ford Focus ZX3. The drivers side door will open from the inside but not the outside. I removed the panel and found a SMALL broken piece that the best way to describe reminds me of a comma. It doesn’t seem like it can be glued. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
It should be the same process the only difference there should be is removing the window crank. There’s a small clip on the backside of the window crank that keeps it attached to the regulator post. Hope this helps you out. have a great day. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

actually the inner assembly didn’t break, the handle popped off. inspecting it it looks like a screw is missing from the knob piece of the exterior handle. your tutorial saved me from getting ripped off. I had two mechanics tell me that the entire assembly needed to be replaced in order to fix the handle. shady stuff. I watched your tutorial and followed the steps and it works fine, now all I have to do it put the panel back on. Thank you!

tnx for the advice ! i managed to repair it simply by spraying it with wd spray :). i guess the rain and humidity jammed the mechanism
There could be a rod that has become loose or has come off of the key lock cylinder or outer door handle inside of the door. You may want to remove the door panel to see if this is what had happened and reconnect it.
i’ve got a question..my central locking works fine on all doors, but the drivers door wont open from outside but do open form inside..can you tell me what can be the prob because the mechanism works fine, it’s just the handle. any tip ?
This appears to be slightly different than the procedure on my 2007 Focus SES. I don’t see any rubber plug to remove. I do see a #20 Torx screw but it appears to be holding on the inner mechanism also. Mind you the inner skin makes it tough to see much of anything. The other end of the handle appears to be a #15 Torx head. I had to go out and buy those 2 drivers before I could do anything. Must be differences between years and models of these cars since there are several models.
You would need to take the door panel off, reach inside the door and reconnect it.

This video is very helpful but is replacing the rear door handle of a 2001 SE sedan somewhat similar to this? I cannot find a repair guide, video, or info on replacing the rear door handles of a sedan. :[
You may want to look to the side or in the bottom of the door to see if the rod that helps to pop the door open has fallen off.

I think I have the same problem as g7h9o9s7t – I got a replacement door handle because the original stopped catching the latch, but when I opened up the door, there wasn’t anything connecting the handle to the part that pulls the latch, and the original handle didn’t appear broken. Any idea what’s missing?

This was perfect for me to get to the handle. The problem was the metal bracket, or grey cast metal piece, that the handle actually moves to open the door. Don’t know where Ford went wrong with these door handles. People have trouble getting into all four door of my car because of that and I’m figuring I’ll have another broken piece soon. Good vid though.
