Freddie Norström says:

psst wait until he is done then tell him that he forgot the timing cover ;)

sirevil120 says:

Why are you working against yourself. How about instead of pulling up on
that crescent wrench you go to the other side and push down on it. Work
smarter, not harder.

reason914 says:

The CORRECT way to install it.

aceofspades02 says:

What I got more curious now, is HOW this balancer comes OFF there??

dxguy says:

NO!!! You never just press it on partway. You always press it tight
against the timing gear, otherwise the timing chain will die. And your
crank snout.

Mossy500A says:

Got to do this to a 6.2L diesel. Getting back on calls for the proper tool.
Thanks for the upload!

daniel3188 says:

Showed how to put it on +4
Looked liked Alec Baldwin -1
Forgot the timing cover -2

bolver25 says:

The poor bastard is about to realize that he forgot to put on the timing
cover first!

fosterdl1 says:

I agree with mjs121369. There are a bunch of mistakes in this video. First
some idiot will think you can install the timing cover after you install
the damper, which of course you can not. Also the damper helps hold the
lower timing gear in place and should be installed all the way. I always
“bake” my damper in an oven for about 30 minutes at 325 degrees and you’d
not belive the differance it makes in the ease of the install. Also you can
grab the end of the tool on the hex end to stop it turnng.

Tyler Homesley says:

Another thing that should have been mentioned in this video is that there
is an adapter that links the installer bolt to the crankshaft snout, since
he has it all hooked up together before installation. When you install the
threads on the adapter into the crankshaft, LUBRICATE the threads or you
will wind up getting the adapter stuck inside the crankshaft snout when you
remove the bolt.

AVSCDvideoproduction says:

i have a stick, so i put my tranny in 5th since the torque ration is less
than 1 in that gear

DaveB038 says:

Thank goodness I found this video and you all put it up. I was having a
heck of a time figuring out how this thing is supposed to work.
Unfortunately I just stretched/snapped the thru bolt that connects it to
the crank nose.

PEIRRE GALE says:

@mjs121369… yea heat your balancer to risk warping it smh… sometimes
working harder is working smarter, technitions come up with tools to
install the parts they design for a reason, so just use them, if ur weak
and cant turn a wrench then yeah go act like martha stewart and boil
something.

1Robbyrotten says:

dude i just use the crank bolt with impact gun and threads have never
stripped out on me…i must be lucky. o wait you actually just screwed that
thing in the same hole? isnt the force still on the “nose of the crankshaft
threads”?

Lachlan Bush says:

> uses a hammer handle in crank > uses a shifter on the bolt > has the
nerve to talk about correct tool. CHOOSE ONE

1Robbyrotten says:

dude i just use the crank bolt with impact gun and threads have never
stripped out on me…i must be lucky.

Jafromobile says:

Put a rag between your hand and the wrench when you’re honking on that nut.
You’ll be surprised how much longer you’ll last, and how much less you’ll
feel. It’s a lot like using condoms.

Marine Raider says:

Huge mistake was in his use of installation tool. The correct tool has a
bearing washer face with an all thread that threads into crank snout. Then
use a socket on end of all thread to hold it so it does not strip the crank
snout. Crescent wrench start turning the large nut and this presses the
balancer on until it stops . Amazing he did not break all thread in crank
snout. No need for piston stop or hammer holding crankshaft.

nico27004 says:

would i have to take the heads off to use a top dead center stop tool or
can i just remove the spark plugs and use the tool without removing the
head?

mikeinsanediego says:

Good Vid Guys, Would ya do one on mid 80s GM frt diff re-build…ya need
all sorts of special tools to do that…..that would be cool !

justingeturgun says:

well if people are watching a video on installing a harmonic balancer on
you tube.. u think they would not know what there doin at all.. and would
wanna know the proper way to install it . with all the correct part on ..
so they know what it look like correctly with the timing cover on .. i bet
there are many people have now watched this video and installed there
harmonic balancer without the timing cover on ..

isleofmjv says:

OMG your still using the the center bolt. with your fancy tool.. i guess
befor this tool was made all the engines were trashed. cuz he said so.

Junkman2000 says:

Dude, I was all about thinking that I could do this to my LS1 while the
motor is still in the car. Thank you for helping me realize that mechanics
have to eat too. I’ll definitely pay someone to do this before I even dream
about doing it myself. Dream… more like a nightmare! lol!

65elcamino283 says:

yeah, he wasn’t very clear on that. I think he meant to say “strip the HEAD
of the bolt, instead of THREADS, like he actually said. The threads wouldnt
strip, but the head of that small bolt would have definitely rounded and
stripped over.

HunterCO1 says:

@BoxWrench First off I am a master tech with over 20 years and let me
explain it does in fact work. First off my bad in the fact the part I was
talking about is not hex shaped you used a cresent wrench on it to remove
the tool at the end. I was not talking about the bolt head. The correct way
is to hold the tool from that point not jam shit in the engine.

ir0nl0tus says:

I agree with everything Boxwrench is saying about doing this properly and
safely and I’d remind everyone that it only takes one accident to ruin your
career as a mechanic. As for myself I recently tried removing my harmonic
balancer using the correct tool but it started coming off at a slight angle
and got caught on the woodruff key. Because of my inexperience I didn’t
realize the problem and I kept pulling using a cheater pipe. Bal Broke,
woodruff key broke, need a new crank.

chachavessel says:

By The Book! This is how I was taught to do things. Thank you!

BoxWrench says:

@xmann1088 If you need to remove your timing cover in order to extract the
broken bolts that are stuck in the timing cover then yes, you’ll need a
balancer remover and then a balancer installer later to re-assemble… It’s
actually a good thing that your 5.0 Ford has a water pump bolted to the
timing cover as opposed to the block. On a small-block chevy, if you break
the water pump bolts, you’d have to remove the studs from the block itself.
So, at least you can feel a bit better about that.

lilplayatylr40 says:

ok so i have a ford 302 engine. the harmonic balancer is built to where if
you use this install tool, the way my harmonic balancer is, if you use this
tool then the nut on the tool goes deep inside my balancer.. therefore i
can’t use a crescent wrench. do they make a deep socket deep enough to go
over the tool to get to the nut?

kenman1717 says:

@ranger3931 and it frustrates me sometimes, as i’m flat rate trying to make
money. i don’t try to sell stuff thats not needed, but if i’m fixing
something, and i notice something else thats related and it really needs to
get fixed, i let them know that it has to be done. if it on’t affect
anything, i advise them that in the future maybe.

Mike Rotchburns says:

could you use an impact wrench instead of a crescent wrench? or is a
crescent wrench the only way to do this right

BoxWrench says:

@gorrilla19 would like to see a picture of your scenario. if you felt like
it, sign up at the BoxWrench forum on our website and upload a photo…
maybe we could help figure out your balancer issue

kenman1717 says:

your right it is hard to install one of those in an engine bay. but try
through the wheel well on a fwd car. had one that the balancer seperated,
rubber gave out, thrashed everything. removed old one then got the new one
to install about half way and the installer tool threads just wouldn’t take
anymore, even with lube. had to use the bolt with an air gun. yes it wasn’t
right and stuff could of all went to hell, but it installed. plus the
customer was cheap and didn’t want it done right.

5H4V3D89 says:

if you have a friend grab the wrench and you get in and start the car it
tightens it on super fucking fast…

FordGuy25 says:

You know you’re a real master mechanic if you can put on the timing cover
after the harmonic balancer. lol just kidding, in all seriousness I think I
just found my how to videos when Im going to be building my 408 windsor (
which will be shortly). Keep up the great work! Subscribed 😀

ranger3931 says:

@kenman1717 sorry on that one. i understsnd you now. ive worked at a place
that did,nt care how it got done as long as it did.

TheGixxerMeister says:

Wait… let me get this right… You installed the balancer BEFORE the
timing cover? Forgetting a step much?

zaidusa says:

I did this last night and the adapter from the kit got stuck in crankshaft,
had to pull the harmonic balancer to pull the adapter out, can someone tell
me how to do it without having this problem ?

86VickyLX says:

I just use the bolt to pull it in, however it’s a Ford 302 and the bolt is
ridiculously huge. So I don’t think I need to worry about stripping out the
threads. Never had an issue with that…

Steven Agee says:

I noticed that when he was tightening the tool to put the balancer back on
that he was pulling up. That looks a little too difficult considering how
much force is required to do that. So, why not put the wrench on the other
side of the engine and use the weight of your body to turn the nut? I’m
just saying, work smarter, not harder.

Metropcs111 says:

where can i get the tool for the top dead center location stop…i had to
replace my cahin and gear in my chevy 305 and now im putting the balancer
back on and the engine is in the car still

Negrito Aleman G. says:

cool, interesting, educational video:) ….thats a cool blue! whats the
paint code/name?

ScoraDiTioN says:

@BoxWrench ok … why dont u connect longer arm to make it easier 🙂 ?

herrcobblermachen says:

Thanks for this video, made me realize i had a pulley installer in the
removal kit i rented:). What you can do to keep the harmonic balancer from
spinning is take a big adjustable wrench and lock it down on the end of the
through bolt there, and then turn the nut with your other hand, man, it was
a hell of a work-out. Greatly appreciated my partner, thanks dad 🙂

Justin King says:

Doing all of this before putting the timing cover on?
