Thank you because I just bought a 1996 Ford Taurus gl and it was having the
same problem and now I can do it myself. It has less miles than this one
but it’s older so yeah. Also I had the entire engine cleaned along with new
wires, hoses, connectors, freeze plugs, New battery, and the kitchen sink.
Thanks though this will really help mainly because I’m a college student on
a limited budget!

koxx dta says:

I can hear my starter spinning but not on flywheel? Any suggestions?bendix?

Patrick TheBaptist says:

I’m just about to do this right now, shame it;s 15F outside cold cold.
Thanks for the video!

Kenny Morton says:

I think I’m having the same problem it sounds like it a battery problem but
it’s been replaced recently along with the alternator. It does have an oil
leak like that one and it started to turn over slow before it started, but
now it doesn’t start. Does that sound like the same problem?

Elena Solis says:

Very nice.. My Taurus is a mess in regards to oil leaking all over the
starter. Anywho, one of the 13mm bolts that seat the starter to the housing
is a real pain in the ass to reach. Would it be easier to do it from the
top or would I have to remove some parts to reach it? Additionally, am I
better off with wrenches or ratchets? Thank you for the vid.

Kristine Moore says:

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus and although I don’t have an oil leak, it appears
as though I have a battery problem but both the battery and alternator have
tested fine. My next thought is the starter. The battery light comes on
intermittently and when I start the engine I sometimes get what sounds like
metal on metal. Any help for the mechanically challenged?

Ryan Grewatz says:

I’ve seen a couple of your videos lately. Thanks for making the information
so clear.

SilentServiceCode says:

I see you changed the battery too but didn’t mention anything about that.
Why?

counterclockwise00 says:

is there any way to clean the brushes ?

Michael Alvarado says:

Does the starter on a 04 ford tauras need to be shimmed or is that based on
the starter?

PRADZ says:

This was a great tip and a excellent video. I have been a GM mechanic for
29 years and I am used to working on only GM products. My girlfriends car
had that exact concern and I was actually able to clean out the start and
clean the commutator and brushes and it starts like brand new. Thanks for
the tip and the excellent how to video.

ionthegravity2 says:

Excellent video!! Now if I can only convince my wife not to spend an arm
and a leg on a shop to do the same job….

Anthony LaBoy says:

is it a SOCH?

TTownPiper says:

Thanks so much for this video, I had the same problems with our 2005 Taurus
and this saved us from having the car towed to a mechanic for a replacement
starter. Great simple instructions and great explanation why the starter
failed.

Dave Horst says:

Howdy everyone. Fordtech I hope I’m not stepping on your toes, but I’m
replacing my oil soaked started on my 3.0 today. Just thought I would throw
the torque specs on all the bolts for the starter if anyone actually wants
them. Per the piece of paper that came with it, the mounting bolts got
16-20 ft/lbs. the battery cable goes 98-115 in/lbs. and the switch terminal
goes 40-55 in/lbs. good vid bud. Take care!

qq kk says:

If that old starter was only malfunctioning because a mixture of oil and
graphite from the brushes (which is normal wear) was preventing an
electrical circuit from completing then that starter could have been
cleaned up and reused (assuming nothing else was wrong with the starter). I
state this because the starter interior looked in good condition
(otherwise). Of course, the initial oil leak source would definitely have
to be resolved.

yorttube says:

thank you very much, Im not a mechanical guy at all, but i just did this in
about an hour. I did not even need a jack. Its true about the oil leaking
on the starter. Its my fourth starter (get life time warranty).. First one
i changed my self.

GooglFascists says:

Of course the little 3.0 spins nicely with a rebuilt starter, but I’d like
to see you repair the old starter with a new brush set, cleaning the
commutator, etc then fashioning a shield to keep oil off it in future.
Brushes are available and it would be great for Depression-laid off
people who can’t just pull $150 out their yang for another starter.

fishodorvagina says:

How was the oil filter leaking, was it not screwed on tight enough?

Toonses says:

Wow really terrible design.

Steve Rob says:

Ford Quality Job One- HA Ha – I thought ford would have had a cover
for the starter. I would just wire some aluminum flashing on it to
keep the oil off the starter. Not sure if you put thread locker on the
starter mounting bolts or not . Great vid. Thanks.

Kevin Rogers says:

at least the bolts wont seize in there! haha

Jared Hume says:

Tricky problem for you. I have a 03 ranger 2.3l. Slow crank and start up
intermittently (seems like it starts right up in colder weather and
struggles more when its warm out) I tested my battery and its good. I also
cleaned up my terminal connections and I’m still having an issue. I also
have a slight hesitation at cold idle. No codes. Any thoughts would be
helpful. Thanks! Love your vids!

chipete1 says:

P0304 I change the coil pack and plug but I’m still getting the code any
