Ford OBD-1 ECM Repair

Ford OBD-1 ECM Repair

I took some shots while repairing bad electrolytic caps in my ECM, replacing them solved 95% of the bucking/hesitation problems that I was having.

Its unlikely that powerwashing would have shorted the ecm, its tucked away
pretty well. I would check the fuel pump relay first, its pretty out in the
open (can you hear the pump hum momentarily when you turn the key on?).
Second pull the distributor cap and soak the inside down with WD_40. If it
still wont start check to see if there is 12 volts at the coil while
cranking the engine. Post what you find out and we can go from there.

I have this exact issue!!!!! 1994 E350 7.5L. We’ll see how it goes
with this repair. Thanks for posting.

Thanks! I’m pulling my PCM today and checking it!

Amazing job with that ECM, and yes, with these trucks all you need to run
is cooper spark-plugs and you should be fine. I have a question: My 93
Bronco stop working after a power wash and I suspect it could be a short in
the ECM. If that’s so is that easily repairable? if it popped some caps
would it stop working? the engine turns but it won’t start.

Tinker Itus says:

Did replacing the capacitors resolve the problem? I’ve been doing some
component level electronic repair but more so on LCD TV’s and an XBOX 360
someone gave me that I need to do a CPU/GPU reball on it. Someone also gave
me a PS3 that was broken and I was able to fix that too.

Tectron1 says:

Its possible to tweak the ecm parameters, but it wouldn’t be worth the cost
of the equipment needed to do it in this case.

Tectron1 says:

It cured most of the problem, I can accelerate slowly and smoothly now
where as before I had to floor it to get up to speed. At the most now its a
mild hesitation, most people probably wouldn’t even notice it. I have a few
other things to check but I wanted to start there since it is the most
crucial component, Ive fixed some computer monitors by replacing faulty
caps, I repair guitar amps and there is always bad caps in those.
Electrolytic caps are probably one of the biggest causes of failure

Tectron1 says:

I replaced the auto-lite platinum’s that were in it with NGK Vpower copper
plugs, The hesitation is now gone, and at highway cruising speeds Its
pulling more vaccum. Ive always heard people say that platinums were no
good in the 4.9, but I never really believed it until now.

Tinker Itus says:

I wonder if you can flash the firmware in the computer with some update or
maybe a high performance firmware.
