While working on Richard’s Ferrari 458 Italia, we needed to verify the torque specs on his brake caliper bleeder valves. Due to some misunderstanding on how his torque wrench works, Richard may have accidentally snapped off the bleeder screw. This is a pretty common thing as the bleeders are made of a softer metal (aluminum) and are prone to being rounded off or snapping off and getting stuck in the brake caliper.
At first we tried using my speedout reverse drill bit set. After numerous attempts to reverse out the broken bleeder, we were unsuccessful. We tried screw drivers, heating it up with a blow torch, chisels, and just about anything else we could think of. Ultimately after quite a few hours, the speed out drill bit shattered and the hardened steel bit was jammed into the remnants of the bleeder. This made is impossible to get any sort of access to the screw and we were forced to remove the caliper and take it to a machine shop.
A new brake caliper costs about $3500 for a Ferrari 458 Italia with the carbon ceramic brakes. A used caliper is about $1700. The machine shop only charged Richard $80 and did an outstanding job. The did not have to use a helicoil or drill out the bleeder. By using a powerful reverse bit, they were able to remove the bleeder and not even damage the existing threads.

Those take like 10 lb/ft. Not sure why people crank on those small bleeder valves
Blind leading the blind haha
Tape is cheap and it's your friend! Poor Caliper
There other kinds of easy outs and u tap it in like you were trying with the screwdriver
That guy has a lift on a lift. I want that too
Next time this happens use a torx head and do by hand.
Don’t feel bad. I have NEVER had one of those easy out bits work. I threw mine away!
I have never had one of those easy out kits work! They usually snap and then you are really screwed as no drill bit can touch it. Can you do a video on those tools that are all in premade foam holders and labelled? i've never seen those before, maybe a sponsorship with a discount for us loyal viewers-hint, hint!
Bonus points for using Vernier calipers; double bonus if you read the measurement correctly!
Hey man, been following the channel for over a year! Super cool watching you grow and I was stoked for you when I heard you were switching to full time! I saw your recent story where someone asked for daily vlogs and you said you were already swamped with the editing for 4 vids a week. Let me know if you need an editor. I am extremely professional and already have a really good idea of what your channel is all about! I’m cheap and can crank out great quality content for your channel for daily videos. Smooth transitions and nice montages, un-copyrighted music etc. let me know man my email is marleymanmorgan@gmail.com also my Instagram is @veryl8.c63 I don’t have the Ferrari yet just an AMG haha. Anyways dude I love your content regardless if we do business in the future I’m always going to support your channel. Peace!
All the money no idea
You guys have the money, buy the snap-on one that beeps. $500 bucks could have saved you two days an $80 bucks…lol
Oh lordy, torque wrenches on bleeders… ugh.
Click bait titles are lame, there is never an instance when a simple bleeder valve break would necessitate replacement of the caliper. It's a $10 fix whether on a Ferrari or Ford.
And that's why I would get a mustang…
The oil drain pan on my BMW 328i (F30) is plastic with a plastic drain plug. The torque spec is 8nm (5.9lbft), and my little torque wrench does the exact same thing. Every single time I’ve changed my oil I’ve overtorqued the plug. It doesn’t help that it has a ratcheting mechanism on the head of the plastic bolt. Stupid.
IDK why you would need to torque a bleeder valve unless you want to be ANAL about having a bleeder valve torque to specs! Im pretty sure that is unnecessary and not done in the REAL WORLD!
The drill is "way too powerful" for such a delicate job. Extractors would have worked no problem. Never use power extracting broken bolts and screws…I guess you know that now anyway. Keep it up Dan, You rock
