Replacing a brake light switch on a 2002 Dodge Caravan

Replacing a brake light switch on a 2002 Dodge Caravan

Changing the brake light switch is easy. There is an exception to the don’t use a larger amp fuse. I recently found out Caravans sometimes energize the wires…

Steve Goldstein says:

Good video, very smooth with your explanations. Word of advise: make sure
you cover up your license plate or any other insignia or moniker which
could give away your personal co-ordinates.

Mohamed Akmal says:

Great video sir, Very informative and straight to the point

Enginehead99 says:

Dont be a dum dum lol

Andrew Stawicki says:

I do not have brake lights when my headlights are on. The brake lights work
when my lights are off. What is the problem, please?

gary2984234 says:

Okay pulled out the stop and rh/lh signal fuses… light are still
on..Pulled out the hazard fuse > the lights go off. With the fuse in and
the hazzard relay activated … they seem to blink fine. Perhaps a very
borked hazzard relay?…hmm

Michael Rivers says:

great video. thank you steve. I hope its that easy for my dodge Durango.

gary2984234 says:

Thanks for the video… Didn’t fix the problem though. 3rd brake light
shows about 13-14 volts when brake pedal is pushed, and about 9 volts when
it is not… the other stop lights seem to be on constantly at the same
voltage regardless. I’m guessing theres some short somewhere :(

tmcdade90 says:

From a women’s point of view…AWESOME!

Francine Smith says:

i replaced the front bulbs, they are now blinking but still fast, i
carefully looked at the rear ones they are still in good shape, but not to
long ago, my mail headlight wire leading back to the tail lights got
pinched in between the truck box ans bolt rest, it shorted out my drl
module, i replaced that , i have front blinkers, headlights but still no
beak lights , so i watched ur show, checked all my fuses they are all good,
looked at the tail lights again they are good so i figured bl switch

Brian Bowman says:

Thanks for the help! Worked perfectly on my ’98 GC.

the truth says:

brake lights, brake light switch and the fuse. Thank you

steve45ca says:

Thanks Percaine

sammy fitzpatrick says:

I have a 2006 and my radio shut off and the light when out I don’t know
were the fuse’s are can you help me and thank you for your videos.

Sean Farrell says:

how much do you have to pay your camera person per video steve i hope their
not too pricey, is it me or is it always real windy in your part of nova
scotia ? the local auto shop will put a bounty out on you soon steve if
your not careful, 17 from sean/4mcwatt

mrbobbyh says:

Hey, I don’t know if I screwed up, but I replaced the brake light switch
and I still don’t have brake lights. I also checked the fuse, it was fine.
Could one or more of my brake lights be out? Would they both be out if one
of them was burnt out?

steve45ca says:

ok this makes more sense. The break light switch is fairly cheap, but i
hate spending money that I dont have to, and I wouldn’t feel right to say
its one thing or another without being 100% thats what you need to buy. Do
your tail lights work when you turn on the park lights? signal lights
usually blink fast if a bulb is burnt out. Keep me posted =]

percaine says:

another good one Steve

steve45ca says:

could be a faulty brake light switch or a really bad short but that should
be blowing the fuse or could be blowing the bulbs….a strange one

steve45ca says:

lol….. My concern is the brake light switch doesn’t control the tail
lights, only the brake lights but these could be separate issues. Before
you buy the brake light switch, check the one you have installed now and
see if the button is flipped down…. if it is, flip it up and see if the
brake lights work

steve45ca says:

so the third brake light works but the brake lights in the tail light
don’t?… sounds like it could be either bad sockets the bulbs sit in,
burnt out lights or a break in the wiring harness…. there’s a wire for
each light (3 white/tan wires) that go from the front to the back. Not sure
where the splice is under the dash for each light but the break could be
there

steve45ca says:

The fuse box is to the right of the battery when you open the hood. remove
the black plastic cover and there you go. The fuses are labeled under the
cover =]

sonidoestereofania says:

steve I have the problem of the brake lights light only works above and
below do not work! I change the switch function if you show in the video???
thanks for your help

Zack Hurt says:

Steve..Thanks so much for taking the time o make this video. I replaced
mine today based on your video, otherwise a professional would have gotten
my hard earn money,.. Way to go!!!!

Steven Mckeiver says:

hey Steve have a 2000 caravan. i have singles and breaks lights on the left
but the tail lights dont work on that side.. i have check the bulbs they
work the fuses are good and ideas

Francine Smith says:

yeah the break light switch on this truck is hard to finde and i havent
found a video on were they are located ,

lisa Morgan says:

thanks Steve!! You just helped a girl fix her van!

doug Farias says:

My break lights wont go off. I figure its the switch. I have a 2001 Nissan
xterra, Whe I look up by the pedal I see 2 connector things, I pulled one
out and the brake lights went off. Now I am not sure where the switch is in
regards to the connector??

Brian Litvin says:

Thanks a ton – your video is great and helped me immensely. Hope I can
return the favour somehow, sometime.

steve45ca says:

if your signal lights are flashing fast (and none of the bulbs are burnt
out) and a head light issue, the brake light switch probably isn’t the
cause. Have you researched this issue on dodge forum DOT com?

Steven Mckeiver says:

great with replace the internal wiring is that the part that would plug
into the tail light?

P Ko says:

I am trying tomorrow, hope this fixes it. Thanks for the detailed video.

steve45ca says:

Thanks for adding your input….. with electrical, anythings possible

calvin winstead says:

Thanks ! this was very helpful

Francine Smith says:

nope, no tail lights what so ever, so the switch is my last hope obi1knobi,
🙂 i will find out tomorrow, will let you know if it worked

kjiver73 says:

Just had the very dame thing happrn my switch blew both bulbs but didnt
blow the fuse!!! Better to replace everything ie fuse bulbs and switch for
under $25.00 it’ll give ya piece of mind and will rule everything but
wiring out for the most part it’s almost always one of those three items…

steve45ca says:

It could be the socket (where the bulb is inserted) but I was meaning more
the tail light itself (it has wiring inside that may have gotten corroded)
if yours is like the tail lights are for the 2001-2007 tail lights.

steve45ca says:

I’m not sure what you mean. It’s a 20amp fuse

Patricia Becerra says:

Thank you, it’s the first time for me trying to fix my brake lights, wish
me luck!

steve45ca says:

Yeah Sean, it’s always windy around my place….. I’m not far from the
coast (under 2KM)… my camera persons are very affordable….. thank
god….lol an ice cream here, mcdonalds there……LOL

Daniel Barton says:

great job 🙂

steve45ca says:

could be the internal wiring on the tail lights or the sockets might not be
making a good connection for the tail light to work.

Francine Smith says:

I hope this works for my 97 dakota, my high beams wouldn’t shut off so had
the little black box unplugged i have front blinker’s that blink really
really fast, but still no break lights, so i figure replace the black box
and the switch, i didn’t know it had one , i wish there was a give stars on
here if this fixes my dakota problem that ive been trying to figure out for
4 months id give u 10stars *wish me luck !

jose torres says:

whats the name of the fuse that you change? for the brake light switch?

Joyce Rodrigue says:

Steve 45ca sir i like your video its very informative I like the expertise
verbal commentary sure.
