Dont know the exact size, but if you need one go to your local salvage yard and find any gen 2 ram 1500. It should be the same size.
but later I forgot to hang it back on the hook> and that’s my bad. so….. don’t let the caliper hang from the brake line people. like I did. always support you caliper.
the caliper was hanging from a black bungie cord with a silver s hook. thanks for watching
If its your rear brakes it has a brake line going to the rear brake cylinder that attaches from the back side above the axle more than likely I have seen the rear break cylinder leak fluid on the inside of the brake drum on the rear if that’the case. you need to replace the rear brake cylinders and brakes. since it sounds like a bad leak if the rear brakes shoes get soaked they need to be replaced.and you should always do both sides not just one side. have your rear drums turned at a machineshop
more than likely your pads are wore out and need to be changed. along with your rotors. the grinding sound you hear is most likely from metal on metal. If you go to long with the grinding it could damage your caliper. so change it as soon as you can.
I did clean the off with brake clean, to get the rust protectant cosmoline off the rotors. we just didn’t put it in and I for got to say something about doing that. good catch. thanks.
Can anyone tell me what the size of the banjo bolt that connects the brake line to the caliper for a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 is? I can’t find out anywhere!
so Im replacing the Wheel Bearing Hub assembly and Im having a hard time getting the caliper to get off the rotor the bolts are nice and tight Is there any way to get them to break free easier ??? I tried putting a little pb blaster on them and giving the wrench a little love tap TO no avail I can’t seem to break it free ~ any advice ?
Hi, have a question, if you don’t mind helping. My husband has a 99 dodge ram 1500. He found that rear passenger tire has leaked nearly all break fluid. After watching your video (about a million times) would it be the banjo bolt come loose? An actual tear in the line. I am so excited to help fix our beast. Any advice would be so great!
Sweet video. Thanks bro. Very informative and good lighting. Keep making more.
It’s a 97.
one quetion what year is your ram crones99?
youre awesome thank a lot
thanks a lot guys 🙂 I just did my own brakes on my 1998 dodge ram, and found I needed a 3/8th inch allen from watching this video 🙂 got it done no sweat just changing pads, compressing the caliper with a c-clamp with the cap off the master cylinder, and putting it all back together 😉 FIRST TIME!!
i have the same truck and i hear the “grinding” sound every i hit the brakes. could it be the rotors or the caliper? would it be better to change out everything (pads, rotors, caliper etc.)? also about how much would i be looking at to correct the problem?
brand new rotors and you didnt clean them?? you know they come with a protective coating that needs to be cleaned off right….
not according to 3:07-3:08….
meh i just wanted to make sure the people who watch know its one of the first things they taught us at my school anytime we take the caliper off its mounting point.
You’re right….I’ll give him some grief..I just looked at it again. He shouldn’t have done that. Thanks for watching.
rested against . but its still hanging from the line as there is nothing on that side of the jack stand for it to set on in the video the lever for the jackstand is facing forward.
.
at tge very least if it was on the jackstand it wasn’t after he brought it out and put it back and the amount the line is bent near the point where it goes to back to tubing is still to much.
You can’t see it in the video, but he put he rested the caliper on the jack stand. He should have said that…it’s hard to see.
pete i notice a big mistake you made when you show the new caliper. i noticed that you let the caliper hang off the break line that is a very big no no when it comes to doing breaks. that can break the interior kevlar liner inside the break line so when you go to break it will allow the line to balloon. you started out right but you either forgot or got lazy.
that was very infomative. good job!
No, we had no problem getting the old rotor off. If I remember correctly, it pulled off without having to tap on it or anything.
Not to shabby there Pete. I haven’t seen this video for a year. Now it has 40,505 views? Crazy. Good job.
Nice video. Did you have a problem pulling the rotor off of the hub? You didn’t show that in the video.
@lawsonmc88 Just tighten it as tight as you can with the allen wrench and make sure the caliper isn’t moving around after you tighten it.
How tight did you tighten the bolts holding the caliper on? Did the tool have a torque gauge on it? Thanks. Nice video by the way.
if the brake fluid is leaking change the brake cylinder
What about the rear brakes????
Pretty good video 🙂 I have never R&R’d brakes before but my front brakes are toast. I am going to get the “loaded” caliper/brake pad kit, hoping it will be less time consuming for me (novice). In a couple of the other videos I watched, the person(s) commented on using a torque wrench to apply the correct tightness on the bolts… how important is this? Next time you video changing brakes or whatever.. you should think about using a novice to do it while you talk them through it, good for us!
@Bleiybomb….since topping the fluid off didn’t work, it could be from air being in the lines, in which case you would have to bleed the brakes. It could also be your master cylinder needing to be replaced. If bleeding the brakes doesn’t work, I’d check your master cylinder.
hey just a question i have a 1996 ram 1500 slt, and yesterday my brakes were rock solid and today i have to floor it to stop. I checked my brake fluid level and it was a the minimum line, so i filled it up with more brake fluid and the brakes are still spongy… any suggestions? Do i most likely have to bleed the lines because there’s an air bubble in it?
@Me112233…I think it cost me $150 total to put in new components for the front brakes if price is the issue…I guess I would have saved some money if we turned them instead but my rotors were quit different in thickness. The caliper on one side of my truck wasn’t working correctly for quite some time which made the one rotor pretty uneven. That’s why I put new ones on instead. I should have pointed that out on the video.
The last time I needed to rebuild a caliper (1993 Park Avenue Ultra), the parts store would sell me a rebuit caliper for about the same price as a piston kit. Made no sense, but that was how it was.
I have 300,000 miles on my truck, and NEVER turned the rotors. The braking efficiency is barely affected by a groove caused by an over-worn pad, and the new pads quick conform to any grove. If the rotor has a wave in it, you will know from how the vehicle behaves when you push the brake pedal. Anyway . . . . I too wonder why someone would replace a rotor just for the fun of it. It’s a lot of work to install/pack bearings, not to mention the cost of the rotor and new bearings.
no caliper/piston rebuild kit???……
Thank you so much, all i needed to know was what size the allen wrench is. 3/8, so helpful.
gracias por la informacion. me ayudo bastante para ponerle los frenos a mi dodge.
3 inch..
sports have no factory lift off roads do and di you put chevy wheel cylinders in the back and fix the noself self adjusting problen
Why didn’t you just rebuild the caliper? That would have made for a good video addition. I guess if you have the money, just buy new or redone. Good Video
@ Aggie Galveston–The truck in the video is a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with the sport package. As far as I know that’s the way it came, but I’ve heard those trucks come with a natural lift…maybe 2 inches. The tires are a little bigger than the stock ones.
man keep makin videos this was very help ful..i new literally nothing about brakes but now i think i no enough to do mine on my dodge truck. thanks man so much keep makin videos!
good vid. thinkin about doing it on my ram today. What lift does that truck have?
