Dodge RAM 1500 Noisy Rear Differential Diagnose and Repair Part Two

Dodge RAM 1500 Noisy Rear Differential Diagnose and Repair Part Two

This is part two for the repair titled: ” How to diagnose and repair Rear Axle noise on Dodge RAM 1500 Trucks”.

In this video we show how to finish removing the Differential Carrier, and Differential Pinion.
The video shows a close look at the Pinion Bearings which were the cause of the Rear Axle noise in this particular truck.

If you want to learn how to Press the Pinion Bearing on and off we have a video just for that and this is the link to it:

Greg Herringer says:

What an informative series of videos! They gave me the confidence to tackle what seemed to be a really difficult job. All jas gone smoothly so far….I am just at the point where the re-assembly is about to begin. The only difference Inhave found so far is that there is no mention of the clutch-pack. There was no way the spider gears were going to come out like they did in the video with the clutch pack in place. The spider gears couldn’t be turned by hand ( I am assuming that this is die to the pressure aplied vy the clutch pack. One clip was loose but everything else in the pack looked good so I left it alone. Was your differential unusual in that it had no clutch pack?

Gary Kovach says:

What about the clutch disc kit? Is this an after market part(s)? Just pulled the pumpkin cover and found a broken clip for the disc pack. Looks like the preload adjusters were not even close to where they should have been.

Lloyd Stauffer says:

Not being flippant here but I wish a whole lot of repair shops and dealer ships would subbricibe to this site!
Thanks for the info!
Lloyd

Michael Yearout says:

Oh yea I forgot to say my Noise is GONE….. Thanks.

Michael Yearout says:

Hey man I used your video to repair my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 rear differential and it was just great. The special custom made tool worked very well and was easy to make. I modified it by putting a Tee fitting on the end, with a 12" x 1/2'; nipple. Thanks for the three video's . You mentioned doing another video on complete rebuild, but was not able to find it. Thanks again.

Wyr Twister says:

One of the better tutorials on the subject. Great in depth audio and VISUAL.

Jack Stover says:

My truck is making a high pitched whirring noise starting when it hits 20mph. As soon as i step on yhe gas when im anywhere above 20mph, the sound starts. The faster I go the higher pitched the sound goes. If I let off the throttle, the sound stops. As soon as I step on it, the sound starts again starting with a slight rattle sound when I barely press my foot down. Researched a little and it sounds like carrier bearing or pinion bearing. Anybody have any idea? I need help. It's my daily and I can't even drive it now without fear of destroying something.

Metabo Jones says:

Will this info carry over to the dakota, and where can I find torque info? Thanks very much for your videos, one of the best.

CASCADE BIGFOOT says:

What size is the pinion nut socket?

kpat Kirk says:

Aby Garcia says:

how much do mechanics usually charge for a job like this?

Randy Milloway says:

it could be the breaks. I haven't changed rear breaks. before.

Randy Milloway says:

mine makes loud squeaking noise. while driving. gets louder if you go faster. don't know if that's what yours was doing or not.

Larry Moore says:

Whats the name of the big long thing that you stuck in where the axle goes? Can that be rented from a parts store?

Ubaldo Gutierrez says:

Donna Jaber says:

Michael Schmutzler says:

I have a 2004 Ram 1500. Dealership service techs said my rear axle was used from 2003-2007. How do I find out (1) what the torque specs and preload are for my pinion nut and threaded adjusters? (2) Backlash specs? (3) how does one know how to adjust the pinion depth, on reinstallation, so it isn't too far in or out?
Thanks soooo much for the video series, and the tool video. Priceless!

Francisco Javier Lee-Tapia says:

Love your videos I'm hoping you can shed some light on my issue. I have a pulling sensation on my 2000 DodgeRam 1500 when I speed up I'm thinking U-Joint or backlash also I have a pinion seal leak to change the leaky seal do I need to mess with the backlash ?

VashthStampeede says:

You know your stuff with that differential. But, your camera has focal limitations. When you put things you want us to see too close to the camera, we see a blur instead of the pits you are trying to show us. Your camera might have a "macro" mode you can switch into and focus closer than normal mode. Otherwise, great video.

akaredcrossbow says:

My jeep commander is doing the same thing. The sound was coming from the right side rear and sounded like a wheel bearing. I just changed the right side wheel hub and it's still making the noise. I am very mechanical, but this is my only vehicle and I don't want to mess it up so I'm going to have to spend $500-$1000 to have it done by a mechanic. If I had a second vehicle it would be on jack stands and already torn apart and being fixed and saving a lot of money. Thank you for the great video.

Robert Gantry says:

There's a better way to get the ring gear out than loosening the adjusters. If you don't loosen the adjusters, then you don't have to re-adjust them.
You get two wrenches to fit the ring gear bolts. You put the box end on a ring gear bolt, and let the ring gear turn until the wrench rests against the bottom part of the housing. Then put the other wrench on a different bolt near the top of the ring gear. Pull on the top wrench, rolling the ring gear carrier out of it's saddle. I don't let anyone help me with this, as a helper may smash your fingers, or drop the ring gear on your foot, your face, what have you. The wrenches will not loosen the bolts, the ring gear will come out before you put enough torque to loosen the bolts. Use a bump stick, or the butt of your wooden hammer handle to bump the ring gear back into place during assembly. No adjustment should be needed for just replacing the bearings.

Scott Jenkins says:

I have a 2001 dodge 1500 and the rear U-joint on the drive shaft is way different than the one in this video. Mine has a big flange plate and the u-joint does not come apart with those convenient caps. Does anyone know how to remove the u-joint from the type of driveshaft I'm talking about?
