Clear Coat over Rust Paint – DIY Professional Rustoleum Paint Job

In this video we take a 2003 Pontiac Vibe and give it a refresh. The car was not in awful shape and the paint was pretty good. But it did have some issues. There was rust over the windshield, rust stains running down the rear doors from the door handles, and it also had some rocker panel rot. This was the perfect candidate for a Rust-oleum paint job. First we took everything off the car that we didn’t want painted blue, then started fixing all the rust, and sanded down the entire car. After masking we were ready for paint! We used Tremclad, which is rust-oleum, but in Canada it is branded as Tremclad. Either way, this is a oil based enamel rust paint. We mixed two different blues to get the desired blue we were going for. The paint was mixed 50/50 with reducer and a blob of hardener. Two coats of blue, then 12 hours to partially cure, then 3 coats of automotive clear coat. We used a brand called Rouge for our clear coat. The end result was fantastic. We hope you enjoyed the video and consider subscribing!

We have another project coming out next week so keep an eye out for that!

Awesome paint job! I saw a truck that was painted with colored bed liner paint. Little darker than your car. There is a coating that won't come off.

That's a solid result from a cheaper style paint. My recommendation for the rims is a satin black or a matte gunmetal color. If it's affordable, get a larger rim and a tire with a lower profile sidewall. Maybe a 40 – or 45 series style tire.
