For those trying this you will need a ratcheting closed wrench for the bottom bolt to make it easier, For the top bolt you need a flexible extension on your Ratchet to make it much easier to remove. Takes a bit of time, but doable ……!
I went to NAPA auto parts and found a ground strap with the same type of strap, and cut off the ends. NAPA part #710899 On the solenoid bolt, I rolled the strap, and wrapped it around the bolt and pinched it between two brass washers. On the starter, I used an all copper, electrical U clamp from the local hardware store.. Tightened the 9/16 nut while holding the strap with lineman pliers. Sealed it all in electrical anti oxidant grease. Works great now. Fixed for about 16 bucks. BOLTA
Thanks for the you tube presentation. My starter problem on my 2006 grand caravan, was different than yours. But, after looking at your presentation, I figured I would look underneath and see if I could clean the contacts without removing the starter. Of course, my solenoid did not have the removable back cap like yours. But, looking around, I found that the fine mesh copper strap running from the output of the solenoid to the starter, had come apart and was no longer connected. TBC
You are correct that 9 out of 10 times the problem with a starter not acting properly is because the Solenoid is gunked inside with carbon. A tail tale sign of that issue is when the starter only clicks and will not start, then firmly tap the starter assembly with a hammer. If it starts after that then you simply bought yourself a very little bit of time until it happens again. The hammer tap simply disloged some of the carbon and let the Solenoid pluger pop the starter gear out out.
i have that problum too..my brother in law told me to replace the 2 copper L shap..so i did and it work like new.. he said the reason why the starter wont work becasue the circle thing is not gridding on the 2 L shap copper. save me tons of money. and ur video help me take out my starter 🙂
time to start reading better. there are only two 15mm bolts to take off. the 18mm bolt right above the top starter bolt is for the motor mount, I guess, hence the comment right below this. Thanks ADHD.

The 18mm is a bolt to the motor mount, the 15mm starter bolt is below that on my 99 3.3l Grand Caravan
It’s a 15mm. Stat with it; it’s doable.
Great video. However, I am unable to get out the bottom bolt. It seems to be 18 mm. Is there a special tool to remove it? The 18 mm box wrench I tried couldn’t pull it. HELP!!!
So for the cost of the starter from Advance Auto at 82.00 (after core exchange), she fires right up. Huge victory for me today, especially with Christmas in two days. Thank you, again, and thank you GMF1313!
This saved me today. We have a 1998 Grand Caravan and the starter was doing the clicking thing for a long time — months. After several key cranks it would fire up and then be fine. But yesterday, it was the end of the starter. Just a click and nothing. GMF (below) Thank you!. You saved me from the 18mm bolt. You are right — both are 15mm. Oddly enough, I was able to get a socket on the top bolt and was able to get it out without the universal joint swivel adapter.

bottom bolt isn’t hard to find, you have to be on the driver’s side under the transmission looking across. Bottom bolt is behind the front motor mount. Also left out is you have to use a box wrench on the bottom, swivel adaptor with extension on your ratchet for top one. Also left out, there’s an 18mm bolt over the starter bolt where he pointed, took that one out first before I realized. Also both bolts are 15mm. Due to the things he left out, a 15 minute job turned into an hour and a half
SO WHAT ABOUT THE BOTTOM BOLT?
I like the way he goes from pointing where the bold is to suddenly the motor is out. Just like the Haynes manual to leave out a step or two.

We are using your tutorial to take the starter out. when you talk about not getting the camera in to see the bolt from the top, we think we found what you are talking about. However, we feel two bolts…one bigger than the other, and right there close to each other. which one are we talking about to get the starter out?
I have the exact same issue. Starts every third time when it is cold and then when it warms up pretty consistently. Replaced the starter relay (very cheap and since the car was 15 years old thought what the heck) and I know that the batter is in good shape. Thanks for the informative video.
Going to try this, I have 1997 Dodge Caravan ES 3.8 – it has the same issue, 10 or so times then it starts. Will update when completed, you may save me a nice chunk of change. Thanks for the video!
