The old saying is true, “There’s no excuse for Bad Timing” so in this video I’ll show you the tried-and-true method for installing (dropping) a distributor into an engine that will keep you right in Time all the Time.
Now in this video I’m doing it on a 460ci (7.4L) BBF (big block Ford) with a Weinand Dual Quad Tunnel Ram and it’s a points system but the method doesn’t change. I do the same thing with an HEI Distributor, and it also works on any engine that has a distributor (you can use this same method with Mopar, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Buick, Pontiac, ect ect ect). The only thing that will change is how each make numbers/labels their cylinders, and where you are starting with number one on the distributor cap.
As I mentioned in my other video on this topic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO3tEYqYzzs you can change where number one is on the cap, but if you are setting it for the stock location do your true research on where Number One actually is on the Distributor (Dizzy) Cap. For this I prefer to use Motor’s Shop Manuals. They are the most dependable of all the DIY Repair Manuals because they are tailored for the Auto Repair Shops & Mechanics. In this case (Ford) the Rotor in the Distributor points to the number 7 cylinder (2nd on from the firewall on the driver’s side (lefthand side) of the car) NOT number 1 like 90% of everyone says.
Also, I show some of the simple modifications I had to do to the Weinand Tunnel Ram to make enough clearance to allow for full rotation of the Distributor to make fine tuning a breeze once it does fire up.
Hope this all helps and thanks for watching me doing all I can to get out there and “Keep that Metal Hot!”
If the pump drive shaft doesn't line up, I just take an old distributor shaft and rotate it a little until it meshes. An 8mm socket taped to a long extension will work too.
Great video…I was surprised about point to number 7….number 1 like many others is what I've always heard..but now I see what the book shows…thanks for sharing
That was really truly interesting!
