In this video I carry out the common task of replacing a corroded 7-pole trailer connector on the back of a 2013 Chevy pickup. This setup is very similar across many years of Chevy and GMC trucks.
On this one, the corrosion has gone beyond just the trailer socket, so it also needs a new wiring pigtail. Fortunately, replacing both the 7-pin connector and pigtail is a pretty simple repair that just about anyone can tackle with some basic tools.
If the trailer lights, brakes, or other functions on your GM truck are acting up, this crusty old connector is definitely one of the first places worth looking.

I'm not a "shop" and I've replaced both ends of such trailer connectors before, typically I'd solder wires and use heat shrink tubing.. But if this occurred on our vehicle (which it wouldn't, I'm in Arizona), I'd soak each end in a cup of vinegar overnight to dissolve the corrosion; if that didn't clean it, I'd try baking soda. Then I'd rinse off and dry.
It's only surface rust or that's what the government would like you to believe about bridge frames.

I'm in my early 60s with a new F150. After watching Eric and some other car channels on YT, I bought a kit and put Surface Shield on my truck and my wife's new Camry.I live in Michigan. We have never had much of anything go wrong with cars mechanically – out of 40 years of driving, just consumables, one transmission, one idle control solenoid (under warranty) and one thermostat, that's it. Every car we have sent to the crusher was because of rust. With the Surface Shield and renewing that every year or so, I'm hoping I never have to buy another car, though I suppose in 15 years when gas is $35/gallon it'll be time to get an EV.

As someone who was in the RV business for twenty years, also check the ground from the plug to the frame. It's typical for the ground connection on the frame to corrode.
