You really do these vids well. I’ve got two vehicles to do. I haven’t done my own brakes for maybe 25 years. Back then there wasn’t these youtube vids for guidance. Thanks so much.
4:32 he says brake caliper grease. Has anyone used regular grease? The containers of caliper grease I’ve seen would last me 20 lifetimes. If I spill lots.
What a pain in the ass the EB spring was. Just couldn’t get the right combination of vice and dike together. After a few bloodied fingers, a few new cuss words – I got it. There must be a $100 GM special tool to slip that on. Damn, now I got to do the other side…..
Loved the video – just didn’t have the “after a while you get the hang of it” experience = hope to not have to do it again…
when removing the brake hub ? I use a rubber mallet to prevent any damage to it , the retainer EB spring I use a vice on its end and then gently remove the pad hook ( by rotating opposite its insert ) this way I can use the pad itself to counterweight the spring tension 🙂 but thank you for the great upload
Good video. I did the same on my 06 HHR but i didnt do the adjuster thing so it was making a very horrible metal grinding noise. Thi video will be lots of help.
Thanks!
So, I would suggest keep tightening the adjuster from the rear of the drum and going out for a test drive to see if it gets better. Mine certainly did. It’s not much fun jacking the car up over and over, but it is what it is. Good luck!
Same thing with mine (’06 HHR). I centered the brakes along with parking break and seemed fine. Went for a test drive and the parking brake couldn’t even keep my car from moving…like I didn’t have any brakes on back at all!. Went back to the shop, tightened the adjuster a lot more from the back and now it at least holds me in place when the parking break is pulled. I think I need to tighten it some more as it doesn’t work as well as it should when applied at higher speeds (testing only).
is there any reason to adjust the e brake cable after new shoes? for some reason my e brake doesnt work now. i made sure cables seated correctly in shoe just no tension on e brake lever…..
Thanks, wish I’d watched this before wrestling w/ my 2004 Cavalier brakes. They’re exactly the same. Gonna watch this again tomorrow when I wrestle the rest of the job (had to give up today.)
The setup was the same on my 2006 GMC Sierra. I had a little difficulty removing the parking brakes cable from the brake shoe, but once I got it off it was smooth sail. Needless to say the parts were a little bigger. Thanks for the demo, it was very helpful.
Helped with my 2006 Chevy Cobalt. You the man!
you can buy it in convenient single use packets at most parts houses, also white lithium grease works as well
Should work the same on 07 cobalt, yes?
Thank you for the compliment, hasn’t changed all that much though has it. im glad i could help

You got it, sorry i didn’t get back to you sooner just got home, glad you found your answer though
One of his other vids answered my question. It has to be compatible with rubber.

I’m guessing this is similar to Cobalts too?
How long do rear shoes brakes last.

Watched a few of these just now, best one by far. Well Done!
Great video..I might be wrong in doing this but I apply never seez to the outside of the drum where the inner wheel mates with the drum…
