Thanks bro, This allowed me to do my good deed and help my step-day today.
Sometimes it’s the little things that make a difference. Thank you..
It took me 15 minutes to remove the whole mechanism from the frame. I spent
almost 2 hours trying to do it the right way and trying to squeeze the
secondary latch with a set of pliers buy removing the license plate and
going in from the back.
If you choose to take a second and get under your truck, it only takes a
few minutes to romve the whole assembly. (you only have to take out one
bolt and then slide it off the frame)
Please thumbs up this so others will know because it will be a big time
saver to skip all the screwing around I did.
TY TY! Previous owner had the spare in the bed and I couldn’t get it
re-mounted underneath until I heard/saw you push that secondary latch to
release the tire mount. You rule.
I hope to god the dude that invented this tire idea is dead simple and plan
that shit sound evil but fuck it!
Mine got rear ended, the Secondary was damaged (the body shop never caught
it) and the entire tire lowering assembly had to be replaced (of course,
this was waaay after I got the truck fixed)
Great planning on Chevy’s part – I’m sure it worked great on the smooth
concrete floor in their test shop. Thanks for posting and saving everyone
some ass pain.
Wow. What the hell ! Glad I decided to do a test run in the garage before
it became an emergency!! Thanks for the video.
Ahh I am 53. Just lost my job. And my truck comes from New England where
they like to salt these secondary latches along with everything else. The
secondary latch is rusted Hell the wheel is even rusted to the metal plate
that holds it. Instead of searching for a new job , I am spending my time
on this knuckle-headed stuff.
thank you for the tip….can you do it with the spare tire on?
I have been out there wrenching on a bolt that will never come all the way
off but I got it just loose enough to wiggle and drive me crazy now…
Fck me,,thanks for the vid,,fortunatley mine doesn’t have that shitty
second latch crap,,watched the video at least helped me find the crank hole
to lower the bastard,lol
Thank you, your video was very helpful.
I have bought my last Chevy truck, I have bought 2 new trucks from Chevy,
and had nothing but nightmares with both One was in 1990, bought a new 4×4
and tht thing was always in the shop, under warranty but an inconvenience,
the kicker with this truck was I had 50 miles left on the warranty and had
to go to a Dr appt 48 miles away, rainy day and as I drove past dealer the
damn entire distributor went out so I got lucky and still had a few miles
left on warranty because I didnt make it to Dr appt
Holy crap! I was trying to help a guy with one these. He didn’t have manual
or even know where the jack and tools were. (It used to people that owned
trucks knew how to use tools.) I had baby bottle jack, but I didn’t how it
would have helped. This seriously makes dropping the spare on my Dodge
mini-van look simple. Any idea if there is a way disable the secondary and
still have it hold together in storage?
you save my time doing this it is a headache I wonder why GMC broke down !!!
Your no fuxkin help guy…. thx for nothing dick
WOW! Thanks so much!! I have been under my brothers truck for hours trying
to figure out how to get this thing down to put the spare back up there. I
guess they did this so people like me that don’t read the manual will take
it in and they can make a quick buck off of you. I took mine in and they
told me the wire was twisted inside the case thing and they would have to
take it off and order a new one…SOB’s.
Then I bought a brand new 2007 Chevy 4×4, had 3,000 miles on it and the
damn transfer case locked solid, they replaced it, then later the damn
wheels/spindles went out and they wanted me to pay half of dealer price
while under warranty, I fought with them and I won Now I am having noise
come from front end again and this 2007 only has 41,000 miles on it The
speakers blew out of the interior and the stereo is never played above #6
as I am 50 damn years old
there needs to be more automotive videos on youtube.
As a female, I guess my spare will stay in the bed afterall. That’s way
more work than I want to do.
thanks man, saved my ass on figuring out how to get the spare off, i would
have never figured it out. i didnt have the correct rod that lowers the
spare, but luckily the guy at uhaul had a chevy also and had the correct
spare tire rod i needed. thankfully he had a tire iron cross akso orbi
would never got those lugs off.
ILL just call AAA and let them deal with it
thanks ur a lifesaver
Damn it lol I wish I would of watched this first, took the tire off first,
now I have to put it back on. Gay
Thanks a lot for the video. My spare tire apparatus just straight fell off
(rusted where it was connected to the truck) yesterday while I was cruising
down the road. Was going to buy another bracket and hook it back up, but it
looks like that is not going to happen after watching the crap I would have
to go through to use it. Thanks
The latch will turn sideways and come through. I took a zip cut on the
grinder and cut the hook off. I spent 1.5 hours in the rain on the side of
I95 trying to get the spare down b4 I suceded. I especially like the step
in the manual @ #5 where they tell you to crank it up until it clicks
twice. This has nothing to do with removing the tire, but does ruin the
lifting winch. Then at the end in step 15 they say go buy a new winch. I
have a ratchet strap holding mine up now.
Awesome video. Too bad I gotta go out there and deal with it. Thanks for
the laugh/
Fuuuuck where do they come up with this crap. I can only imagine getting a
flat in on some muddy woods road and having to go through hell to get the
spare down. Guess mine is coming off and going in the dump..
The rims on the 2007 are an engineering nightmare, losing all of the finish
and I wax the rims and everything, they let debris in the wheels and eat up
the pads My family have been hardcore Chevy owners since the 50s and that
has come to an end My son has a 2003 Chevy Sport 4×4, the damn tue to
release the spare has closed down so today I get to lay in the cold and try
and figure out how to get his spare down This family is DONE with
“Government Motors” & will now give money to foreign makers
More like give the dipshit a kick in the balls. LOL !
so in other words, if you lift your truck your fucked
Thank you so much for this video!! You are the man. I spent almost 3 hours
trying to drop mine. For those who want to disable it, put a zip tie around
the safety.
Not sure. If the spare seems like its hung up, then it probably does.
Learn the name of the parts .
On the Express van, you have the “benefit” of NOT having a box to put your
spare into. If you stick it in the back, you have almost no storage space
(on a passenger model). All around this is definitely not a fun piece to
work on.
Wow. Chevy failed.
I got three letters for this. AAA. Works every time and I don’t even get my
hands dirty.
My question is, once you get the tire down on the ground, how do you get
that latch out of the tire? Mine seems like it’s too big to come through
the hole
Do the GMT400 gens have this? 98 Tahoe to be specific.
“and then you can swear all you want”….. Boy is THAT an
understatement….LOL
Thanks you rock!
This is one of the reasons I don’t buy american cars.
I have a Tahoe which has the same configuration and not only did it take
forever to get the spare off, but that stupid jack broke anyway, not to
mention it is impossible to balance on those things. Just go buy a bottle
jack for $20, they’re nice and small so just keep it in the car for when
needed.
Appreciate this. I am getting ready to make a 1300 mile trip to Florida.
Have a 2007 Silverado. Tried to drop the spare on another occasion to check
it, and it was engineered as you said. Amazing the common sense the
engineer, and the boss guy who signed off on this displayed here.
