We are replacing the ignition switch on a 2002 impala, will we have to do the re learn procedure? And also are they pretty much the same ignition switch 02 Malibu and 02 impala.

1aauto says:

You may want to make sure that the engine is getting spark and gas.

LeeTrevizo says:

so i did this and now the car wont start. it just cranks. any idea what i did wrong?

1aauto says:

when dealing with anything electrical, disconnecting the battery ensures you will not get shocked.

FatalCorleone07 says:

Why do you disconnect the car battery??

1aauto says:

Usually if they start to get hard to turn like that, it’s not to much longer before that start to fail. The switch is more than likely going bad. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

1aauto says:

You would more than likely need to get the ignition to turn forward so that you can remove the ignition cylinder.

I watched the video but my key broke off in ignition can I still change the cylinder according to the video even tho I can’t put a key in and turn it like the video shows

Jon Fancher says:

hey my 98 malibu 2.4l wont start, wont even try to start, i replaced starter to find that starter isnt getting power on ignition. I have also noticed gauges jump and clock resets everytime i try to start it. I have noticed that you have to jiggle key to get it to turn. Does this sound like an ignition switch issue?

1aauto says:

If the car ran fine when you turned it off last, you may want to see if it’s getting spark and fuel to the motor. If the camshaft broke while you were driving it, the car would have just died and more than likely have been pretty loud.

Update on 02 chevy impala. we ended up replacing the starter the ring was jammed in the teeth and replaced ignition tumbler and was able to get security to go off it ran fine for a day and a half then wouldn’t want to start. the fly wheel spins but the engine does not want to turn over. we think it might be a broken crankshaft. what do you guys think? you have helped us out so much and really appreciate the speedy replies you have given us.

Try to do a total transmission fluid change along with a new filter on the car. There may be a piece of debris floating around in the transmission that’s hanging up the valve body. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Ryne Luecht says:

thank you so much for the link. I also have an 04 impala (never getting an impala again) that has difficulty shifting from first to second when pulling out of the drive but runs smoothly after. any ideas

1aauto says:

The procedure shown in this video should be the same, or very similar to your application. If you click on the link in the video, you can purchase the ignition show in the video for your 2002 Chevy Impala. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Ryne Luecht says:

could you send me a link for replacing with an impala i got an ’02 that does not want to start anymore turning the key was an art to get it started and made a howling screech noise when engine first starts think it may be the tumbler to get the engine going but I need to replace the ignition

ervanddebskid says:

i had to drill a hole to depress the tab to remove it

1aauto says:

Something like that can be pretty hard to track down sometimes but normally the issue has to do with the ignition switch acting up 9 times out of 10. Bringing it into a shop and having them diagnose the issue will be your best bet at this point.

RE: IMPORTANT NOTE. I have had the Theft System problem forever and it is really frustrating when I am running late, or even worse, when I am stuck sitting in my car in the dark. Think… time change + dedicated teacher + bad neighborhood. It used to happen at least once a week. I heard of some solutions by installing a switch or a remote start. What do you know about these options. Your videos are so easy to follow! Thank you for that!

1aauto says:

You may have to replace the key tumbler. What has probably happened is the teeth in the tumbler have either broken or are getting stuck.

Eduardo Hernandez says:

hey I got a 03 Malibu and the key gets locked on the ACC position, i’m able to take the key out but it will eventually kill the battery. is that what I need to replace?
thanks in advance.

1aauto says:

There shouldn’t be. You may want to disconnect the battery before working on the radio.

TungstenPhoenix says:

Is there any alarm issues to be concerned about when taking the the stereo deck out?

1aauto says:

The new ignition cylinder would come with a new key. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

DJHalo2 says:

Does it use the same key?

1aauto says:

Without being able to get the key to turn somehow, I’m not sure how you would be able to remove the ignition. You might need to have a locksmith take a look at it to see if they can get it to turn.
