Another Reason NOT TO BUY A NORTHSTAR 4.6L Cadillac

Another Reason NOT TO BUY A NORTHSTAR 4.6L Cadillac

I don’t know why a pulley that controls the top cams would be made of plastic instead of steel… but after the tree pull it sat for a week or two then this …

That’s very impressive! I’ve got a 99 as well, but it only has 180K miles.
But like yours, still runs like it did when I bought it at 46K miles.
Fantastic car…..

gates403 says:

Hey man did you buy and how is it doing??

aurorasequential says:

How many miles were on that 4.6? Looks you had the original tensioner on
the water pump side. Probably bad which lead to failure of the cam pulley.
Take car of your vehicle and it won;t happen. That engine compartment is
gross.

jordo5552 says:

Damn this mother fucker Canadian has to be!

tinder says:

Glade you asked I just got in a 1993 STS with the NorthStar, its got
$10,000+ into repairs on the fresh rebuilt motor…. It still has problems
enough issues that at 56,000 miles (91,000 km) its being scrapped. Don’t
think I am telling the truth? I will make another video and show you what a
sack of sick that motor is… 56,000 miles and over $10,000+ in repairs…
Trust me I have owned more than 4 of these cars there all junk! Save your
money! Buy a Honda if you want slow?

InfantryBS says:

I have a 06 DTS 131,000 + miles and I shit you not my water pump tensioner
exploded and my pulley got shredded kinda like yours but there was have the
wheel missing. and now my alternator is bad. idk how to get to it if you
know how feel free to reply back. p.s. fwd v8 in general is different but
should not exist.

DefMode66 says:

Search a 2000 Cadillac STS compared to a BMW 740i on Kelly Blue Book with
100000 miles. The STS has a dealer resale value of $6300 The BMW is $7,600.
The STS new was $48,800 and the BMW 740i was $62,000. Seems to me the
Cadillac has held up pretty well.

Terry Warner says:

I own a 99 DeVille with a Northstar. 150K and NO gasket issues. Like your
uncle, I am MEAN to my Cadillac…that might explain it’s longevity ! ” Not
exactly nice to it ” you write. Uhh…he is showing LOVE to that Northstar.
Its like ” foreplay “….the Northstar LIKES IT ROUGH ! For real…a GM
engineer told me that. Not the best for gas mileage or Officer Radar-gun
though !

Flashvette says:

The Northstar engine was Cadillacs disaster. The made a disposable
engine/car.There is about 30 Devilles in nice condition with Northstar
engines in my local junkyard. So many on craigslist selling cheap. Car is
overheating. I had a 94 deville with the Northstar. I sold it before
problems and bought a 95 Deville with the 4.9 engine. The Cadillac owners
that like the Northstar engines are the ones that have no problems yet.
Wait until thier head gasket blows. How do you like your northstar now?

deisellocc1 says:

i have a ’04 bonneville gxp with the north star and believe me it scares
the shit out of me at times. but if you going to pull trees get a fuccin
454 or something thats like using a lamborghini engine to pull the space
shuttle all that stress on that old ass engine you used of course somethimg
was bound to happen…

Gonzolo98 says:

i had a 98 STS that would’nt quit….had so many problems but it was like
tha energizer bunny……keep goin….loved that car……fully loaded to
tha max to…..

hacker126 says:

I own 3 and the redlining “may” have played a part in it most northstars
keep in mind I said MOST Northstars blow the HGs after 100,000 miles

Lane Trujillo says:

Horrible video. Looking at that engine it looks like it was stored in a
salt water tank.

tinder says:

What else do you expect its a Northstar?

natehahn85 says:

On my 2nd northstar with over 200k, love this engine

kaptainkhaos58 says:

There are people with brains on YouTube! That is the water pump can, and
it’s an easy fix IMO. And the Northstar will run forever if you treat it
right. Me and my father both own 98 DeVille’s, mine is pushing 255k miles
and his is over 395k and maybe farther since I’ve been to see him. Treat
them right and treat them good and they’ll do the same to you!

13ir14314 says:

My 09 ford escape has the same plastic pulley to drive the water pump. They
should have come up with something better for when the pump does seis up. I
love the northstar in my 02 deville great engine.

tinder says:

That’s for sure!

hasnachos says:

Why did they mount it sideways for??

doserdog says:

All these people saying the Nortstar is crap. It is a racecar motor in a
non-race car. People don’t run them or maintain them like they should. I
have a 1999 Seville STS with 200k miles on it, never had head gasket or
overheating problems. Still gets 24-25mpg on the highway and still runs
damn fine. If you run them right, do the maintainance, and take care of
them like the manual says, they will reward you.

theVB4000 says:

My head gaskets blew. I fixed it myself and I still love the car.

shiza237 says:

I just had too cime in an straighten out a few myth’s about the n* and this
video. First the early n*’s were designed with a substandard head mounting
system….(The head bolts pull out) causing a head gasket leak…..at least
70% of the late 90’s cars are effected , ( I have a 98 an so I know,). 2)
the water pump malfunctions and locks up, it is driven by a overhead cam
shaft via plastic pulley and belt. So when the pump goes…….so does the
rest. Oh Yeah, best engine ever…..NOT!

A Luck #12 says:

I didn’t watch the tree video. but are you telliing the community that you
towed trees down with your car and shit went wrong and it’s the cars fault?
Please clarify if I’m wrong.

tinder says:

Has anyone checked timing with a timing light? That could be your issue or
something to do with your distributor and rotor there should be signs of a
short under the cap if so it could be an electrical issue. I think your
timing is off but I am no mechanic… I think the 4.9L has a timing chain I
don’t know if it can skip without braking like a timing belt can… Anyone
else have any input speak up~!

1482man says:

I’VE HEARD ALOT OF PEOPLE TALK VERY BAD ABOUT THESE CARS AND HAVE HEARD
VERY FEW GOOD THINGS ABOUT THEM . IN FACT , MOST DEALERS IN MY AREA ARE
ASKING NO MORE THAN 3,000 – 5,000 FOR 2000-2004 MODEL DEVILLE’S , SOME WITH
LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ! Obviously , these are not very reliable cars
being they came new at almost $50,000 …. people don’t hate on me cause
I’m just speaking from what people tell me …

mtnman1984 says:

I’m glad to see your comment. I’m not a Caddy fanatic, but I’m so sick of
people who buy these cars for cheap, forget that they were once $50K luxury
cars, and run them like an old Honda. Just do the maint. right and on time,
and they are pretty good cars.
