In this video I have a look at a customers 2014 Cadillac CTS 4 with the big 2.0 that came in with a slight miss at idle. Let’s say it escalated quickly.

Customer told me this would be the third engine that did this in this car! He said it is time to send it to the crusher. Game over for this fine GM product.
Bore scope I used in this video: https://amzn.to/43wSbXX
Video series I did on a similar car: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaJW8Ju80ORZlJVpGIenX1wTtdS5qTpiu&si=aAemjSpAZapxEYUg
I'm guessing there's no portable cylinder honing tool to recondition the cylinder walls while the engine is still in the car?
With any engine suffering that kind of cylinder damage, what would happen in the next 1k, 10k, 30k miles if you simply disconnected that cylinder’s injector and kept running everything as normal?
What sort of secondary problem would develop that would ultimately force repair or replacement? Obviously it still drives under its own power, but for how long?
"Put the pedal to the plastic " always cracks me up !
You could also just use your shrinking laser and shrink yourself down to about 1cm tall, then hop into the cylinder and have a look around. Make sure you have a friend to retrieve you..
Something looks odd on the exhaust valve seat at 19:03 to 19:08.
Jeez, what a piece of junk. And why would you put a 4 cylinder engine in a Caddy?
always American cars break down so fast that why I will never own one
5:00 This explanation is priceless.
Very interesting, enjoyable and informative video. Thanks!
Too funny this morning, even my wife had to laugh since I am the only one to use the word " Cadence " then you did this morning ( well, we watched your vid this morning )
Cracked piston?
Game over lady
No turbo. EVER!
Thats direct injection for you.
'HEY NOT BAD ONLY 8 TROUBLE CODES" Very funny ,
damnit Eric, now I have to have a bore scope.
So you’re saying that a mechanic in a bottle can’t fix that? I love that camera!
I saw 2.0T and 2014 and already knew it was likely a cracked piston, the early LTGs are pretty notorious for doing that like the TSB Eric mentions. Guess I'm glad I have an LHU with timing chains as the most common failure point instead of wondering if I'll randomly get a dead cylinder from a failed piston.
The thumbnail said "Caddy" so I thought "Oh boy, a Volkswagen video!".
Especially love at 22:56 Eric says "the MILF is on", when reading the bulletin about the MIL. Nice faux pas.
Josh walking up as Eric makes the turbo blow off noises, gotta wonder if he laughed or is just use to the typical shenanigans.
OMG, 10 years, three engines later and it's done. I walked passed a parking lot yesterday and just for fun and giggles (as the man says) counted the cars. 32 total, 2 domestic (Jeep and a Caddie) the rest were all Honda, Toyota and Hyundai/Kia, in that order. Says it all.
Love the wiggly thing. Again, proper investigation, thorough and well reasoned.
Not sure if your tool has it, but the newer GM vehicles have a compression test function in GDS2 that will disable the fuel injectors and crank the engine for a specific amount of time. Was helpful to be able to click a button and have it crank over to do the compression test when the 2.0T in my wife's '15 Malibu died. Was similar to this one too, low compression on #1.
Absolutely cool boroscope. Quick diagnosis.
Some of you old timers might remember the 4100 or the 8-6-4 or maybe even the Northstar 4.6. GM has really stuck it to the customer Caddy base. Really a shame they didn't throw the GM 3800 in those Northstar's. As far as a 4 cylinder I don't remember GM ever making a good one.
We have a piston manufacturer in my town, that used to be our largest employer. They make pistons for GM, Toyota, Nissan, Ford and many others. They have in the last 10 years or so, been moving all of their production to Mexico. They were supposed to have moved everything and close our plant by the end of last year. They have not closed our plant yet and sound like they might be bring some of the production back from Mexico. Apparently, Mexican quality isn't as great as they thought it would be.
how long until the inspection sticker expires? I'd drive that thing as-is until then, then call it a day. might as well get that last bit of utility out of it.
