buick lesabre fuel gauge problem

buick lesabre fuel gauge problem

My 2003 Buick LeSabre started doing this one day. Only happens after there is less than half-a-tank of gas left. I’m just going to live with it for now.

Trell Davis says:

Your fuel sensor has gone bad. Replace it by accessing the fule pump
through the truck.

RemyJackie says:

@1stsmosh no you remove it via the trunk, the pump assembly is SPRING
LOADED and gets TALLER AND SHORTER you must COMPRESS IT by hand (MAKE IT
SHORTER) and it comes right out. If you drop the tank you are really doing
it only cause YOU want to not cause its the way to make this repair

Brandon Robinson says:

Mines does the exact same thing. Only when there gas pass half a tank I
wants to act right. Anything below that will leave me guessing.

RemyJackie says:

@skyfirefighter1 fuel sender attached to fuel pump bad from running tank
half full all the time, corrodes sender, keep yer tank full wont happen

arniemax1 says:

my 2 cents… 2001 OLDS AURORA. ONLINE BLOG FOR GM HAD PART NUMBER..$28
DEALER PART…ONLY NEED TO REPLACE THE CONTACTS THAT WERE MENTIONED ABOVE.
IF IT IS ACCESSIBLE THRU TRUNK……GM TYPICAL..IT’S NOT TOO BAD…NO NEED
TO DROP TANK…

OHBUCKEYESisBACK says:

Got a 2002 lesabre, same issue, it’s annoying but I’ve learned to just fill
up about every 300miles.

Amy Sidious says:

Well then you have a Buick with extended trunk space…when it was tried
here, there was not enough room vertically to take out the assembly.

RemyJackie says:

@SMAN873 yes a new fuel pump for a buick (HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS) comes with a
new sender (MANY LESS DOLLARS), but if the pump is working (car starts u
can drive it) i would just replace the sender on the pump

freestylehotboxx says:

How do you fix it mine does that bug just now its not marking at all now it
goes fro. E to quarter when im driving when im parked it goes to E bellow
please help.

lungstruck says:

@ericrichard7 I just watched my miles, I think I used to let it go to 350
and then fill up.

lungstruck says:

@1stsmosh I don’t think it’s something I would have tried tackling myself.
I lived with it for about a year. The Buick was totaled in an accident a
few months ago so it’s no longer a problem for me!

RemyJackie says:

@1stsmosh ok conspiracy theory, the real fact is when gas is cheap people
keep their cars fuller, when its expensive, they ride on fumes all the
time, this exposes the sender to air more often than not (SITS OVERNIGHT)
and that corrodes the sender. This is happening more and more the past 5
years, as it just happens fuel has been expensive and the economy tight,
hope i didnt explode your mind with facts, there is no grassy knoll here

Stephen Malone says:

We had a 2000 Buick lesabre that kept going. We had to scrap it today
because the whole front end was messed up the intake was cracked and a
whole lot of other stuff but ours did that too and we fixed it by replacing
the fuel pump

snapCRACKERSpop says:

its like a boner

usgp1 says:

2004 here, mine dropped below “E” and won’t come back up.

wolskinator says:

I have a 2000 and i had the same thing happen only it would either say
empty or full lol i just used the trip meter

lungstruck says:

@sc00b3rt Same exact thing! I’ve learned to ignore it and watch my miles.

eter van says:

same problem with my buick 2002 century, besides that my PRND / odometer
reading light is busted, and i have to solder the 4 resistors.

Amy Sidious says:

The problem is a brass metal resistor which wears out after 8 to 11 years.
So we have the technology to put humans into space but can’t have a method
for a fuel gage to last 25 years on a Buick. GMC did this on purpose to get
the vehicles back in for repair to support the dealerships.

ChaplainK says:

Many of this same problem….and even those who say they had it
repaired….no one has pointed toward the cause. I tried replacing the Fuel
Pump with a used one and it did not fix it….maybe that one was bad too.

joshmanbalt says:

i have a 1998 buick LeSabre that fuel gauge is messed up

dperry25 says:

btw its the sedan if it matters

37spy says:

Got the same issues with our 2004 SUV Buick rendezvous, just living with the
it for now…keeping a jerry can on hand for when i have to march to the
petro station.

Stephen Malone says:

My car would wobble when you drove it and all the rims were bent to the
point of where nobody knew how they held air!

HustleWorldEnt1 says:

there shud be a recall on 2000-12 Buick Lesabre’s gas gauge problems!

Donald Perrin says:

@1stsmosh On the 2000 to 2005 lesabre there is an access panel in the trunk
to get to the sending unit. Must have been a common problem for that to be
added

Ant R says:

I have the same car and the same problem, where is the sending unit pump
assembly located?

dperry25 says:

1996 buick regal gs. Same problem. goes up when accelerating, down when
braking/turning. only moves 1/4 tank though and eventually settles. whats
the problem? its very annoying.

sc00b3rt says:

2000 LeSabre, same thing happening to mine. Goes all over the place. If its
under 1/2 a tank its possessed. Just living with it, watching my miles as a
gauge.

Amy Sidious says:

Yes that has been tried, but there is not enough vertical space to lift the
assembly up out of the hole. You still have to take down parts of the
exhaust system, remove all the fuel for safety, cap off the lines, and drop
down the tank.
