You’re never too old to learn not to over think a problem. I learned that
lesson in my first semester of trigonometry. Stupid problems were all made
to be done in your head but I spend the first two weeks burning up my
calculator and wearing down pencils doing everything the hardest way
possible.

I would recommend that you get some liquid flux, or even just a flux pen,
for SMD stuff like that – it really helps. It is a good idea, too, to clean
the repair with iso-al to remove any residue (spits of solder and flux).
By the way, are you using lead-free solder? I’ve noticed a few times in
your videos that it doesn’t pool nicely and is often dull and clumpy. I
personally hate the stuff and refuse to use it but I’m wondering if that’s
the reason you’re getting joints like that.
Anyway, glad you got it working. The upside I suppose is that those
resistors are not going to give you troubles any time soon.
Thats funny Jim,I have the same car and my shift Indicator lights went out
in the spring.but everything else is working.I am glad you did this video
because I was going to repair mine too,with new resisters and it don”t look
to hard to do this job. The hard part seems to be taking the dash apart and
reassembly. Do you still suggest resolder or replacement of the resistors?
Nice change of pace video Jim. Cars can be a real pain sometimes,
especially when they act up. I’ve had my share of similar problems over the
years. That is why I am enjoying restoring my old 1961 Buick LeSabre.
Everything is just so simple on it!
Vacuum fluorescent displays are so common in north American vehicles, is it
a legal requirement or something?
Yea I had to pull mine apart to replace some burned out dash lights it is a
pain. Glad you didn’t replace resistors!
