My mother-in-law’s buick has this problem but in her case the illumination for the speedometer is out (in addition to the PRNDL and the odometer). Do you know if replacing the four resistors will fix the general illumination for the panel?
To the best of my knowledge they do not have to be in a certain way. I might have put them in with the bands facing the same way as the ones I removed, but I can’t remember for sure.
good video though I don’t see where you replaced the resistors but I sort of skimmed this. I just purchased a 99 Century with shift selector lights out..
Used this fix on my mom’s 2000 Century just last week. Replaced all 4 resistors, just in case. Installed Radio Shack brand resistors (150 ohm/.5 watt) — 5-pack sells for $1.49 plus applicable sales tax. Problem solved for a pittance, and odometer/PRND123 display is bright as ever. Thanks for the post, Tom!!
Thanks I finally got around to trying this. Worked like a charm. I’m not much of a solderer so that was the most difficult part for me. Wish you would have included that part, but I got them soldered and hope I did a good enough job. Plus one of the resister was missing but after a little searching I found it inside the dash. Only burned myself once! 🙂 Thanks again.
i got the same issue on my 2000 chevy blazer and i’ve looked at it twice already and didnt c any indication of resistor ware but i might check it out again sometime
radio shack has them. I used 150 ohm, 1/2 watt. However, some people have said 1/8 watt are the correct or better ones. Mine are still working though.
Just wanted to say that I worked on the instrument cluster today, and the lights on the odometer and gear shift selector are somewhat brighter, however they are very bright in auxiliary position but much dimmer in the on or run position. Another observation is that 1/2 watt resistors are way too large and the better resistor size would be a 1/10 watt.
I’m really not an expert. I made my video because when I had the problem, and looked for solution on youtube, the other videos weren’t quite as thorough. So maybe you can find a solution to your problem with other videos. But one thing you might check fuses. Some or all of those things might be on the same fuse. But if so, you’d have to determine why the fuse blew.
hi..you can help me..my father had the buick century limited 2001…and internal lights and the lights will not turn on the radio power mirrors not working ..
Wow thanks man seen your video Radio Shack is closed it’s night time. I just put the one back in and it works ………easy fix if it reoccurs .thanks again. You kick ass!
I HAVE A 2000 LESABRE AND CLUSTER, GAUGES, OR RADIO NOT WORKING. WHAT DO YOU THINK I SHOULD START LOOKING INTO?… OH BUT MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN KEY TURNED FORWARD ONCES CAR CRANK IT GOES OFF. HELP!!!!
I’m not so sure you do need to take all those panels off. I’ve taken my dash apart several times and never had to remove those for the center panel / instrument panel. But maybe it’s different for a 2000?
THANK YOU so much, I was very upset when the light went out on the car, I tried it just like you said, and It worked GREAT!! Took less than an hour and the resistors were only $1.19 …..again THANK YOU, you are a life saver!! 😉
Repair worked just as described. Only top 3 resistors came off. 2 were 150ohm one was 120ohm. Soldering was not pretty but it worked. Just re-soldered them in.
I have this problem in my 2000 century, but this don’t answer how to fix it
so you have to solder the new resistors in do the clip in i dont get that part
So… the answer is no. There are several lamps (bulbs) on the circuit board that provide the illumination for the instrument panel.
Sorry I don’t know if this will fix the general illumination. I’d have to do some googling.

look at 48 seconds

Do they have to be facing a certain way
check out my channel. I have a video posted on replacing the resistors my 2003 PRNDL instrument panel.

thanks man work awesome

Where can I get that resistor an what size

whats the name of the resistors that i need to get?

It seems like anyone with a Century has or will have this problem. Great video. thank you

replace with 120ohm 1/2watt resistors
no. you only need to remove the one thats around the cluster, down the whole dash face. ive done this.
Sell me your steering wheel.

Soldering is the hardest part can anybody make a video showing to

Yes
do you need to take off all the panels?
I tried put the resistors N part No. 271-010 but I can’t
I purchased them at Radio Shack.
Where can I buy the resistors for the repair
thanks man you helped me save money…. thank you
