In this episode, the replacement N54 starts to finally come together.
After tearing down the original metal-filled engine and transferring over reusable components, it’s time to continue building the replacement engine for my 2008 BMW 335i.
This video covers installation of brand new OE Mitsubishi turbos and turbo oil/coolant lines, rear main seal replacement, engine timing verification using the BMW timing tools, injector Teflon seal replacement on Index 12 injectors, valve cover gasket replacement, spark plug installation, and more.
Along the way, I run into a setback that delays the project, but we keep pushing forward and get the replacement N54 one step closer to going back into the car.
This series documents what it actually takes to replace a BMW engine from start to finish, including drivetrain removal, engine teardown, parts transfer, engine assembly, torque specifications, specialty tools, and the countless small details that most videos leave out.

I'm here always learning Alex just feeding my hardrive. I will have to change the starter on my 2005 325i tomorrow, too much work just to replace it but it has to be done, they want too much money to get it replaced.
Great video, Alec! The whole video went right really quick! It's really interesting to see and to think that those are all parts of my engine. I couldn't really even get a look at my 09 535i n54 turbos until I swapped my water pump out recently. I hope they last a long time! That doesn't look like an easy job!
WHILE you're at it – I'd pull the wheel well cover on passenger side – make sure the DME box has an open drain…. (you prob already did…) – then there's two other drains for your regualar run-off from the hood area (I found a metric ton of leaves in our E60!!)
Watching you brake that line just reminds me of working on my 328i I broke so much and delayed every job always broke something that was to important

You should put a crank seal guard on this engine… they’ve had many issues with belt slipping off, wrapping around the crank pulley and getting sucked in the engine through the crank seal… they’re $15 and worth the peace of mind!
When I did the turbos on my 2009 E60, the coolant lines had rusted in and were really hard to pull them out. Lucky I didn't brake any of them. When I finished the install and replaced everything else back, and started the engine the car started hemorrhaging oil! I really thought one of the turbos was to blame. I disassembled everything and found I forced the "Y" oil line and one of the little o-rings was cut. It was huge mess, but once everything went back in, the car ran beautiful, much better than when I first bought it.
Also, I feel your pain, it's sad that your oil supply line broke, but hey that could've eventually exploded with the oil pressure. Awesome video as always!
My 08 E93 335I had a bad PCV system and during hard driving and boost, the rear main seal blew out just like that. I was using a quart of oil every 100 miles. Pulled the trans, installed the new one, new PCV system and no rear main seal blow out.

I had the same issue with my turbo lines. I end up swapping out the fittings to get them to fit. Next time try using a white sharpie to identify the fuel injectors. Your content is very entertaining, I enjoy your banter, I feel like I’m in the shop with you.

I’ve been wary about rein for a bit now. I put some rein hoses on my e92 and I had to remove them to do something. Me just removing them was enough to mess up the o rings causing leaks. The hoses are like 2 years old, not even. Sticking with genuine hoses from now on
