when we go to install the new shocks we can’t get the bolt to screw onto
the shock. the shock just spins with the bolt as we try to tighten. Howww
did you do it? PLEASE HELP
@edzgarage MrEddieo1 please be aware that BMW has special springs fitting
to the weight of the car either with or without automatic gearbox, M
Technik yes or no, 4 cilinder or 6 cilinder all these things count. The
springs come with a colour code.
Awesome work! I’m going to be attempting a shock/spring replacement this
weekend (if the weather is good) and was wondering just how hard it was to
do. This makes it look fairly easy. I’ve got a 335i but it should be
roughly the same.
Thanks for watching! It’s funny BMWs are just like any other car. I think
people are bamboozled by the dealer into thinking these cars are special in
some way and need dealer attention for everything. Nothing could be further
from the truth lol
I wished you had a channel for the Subaru WRX a few years ago. This info is
really good. Just acquired an E46 wagon with 70k miles. I’ll be studying
these great vids tips. Fortunately there doesn’t appear to be too much
“witchcraft” in the BMW stut assembly. Not too different than the jap cars.
@MrJerrynierzwicki I tried to show how my son pushed the bushing on with
his homemade pusher. If you are replacing with polyurethane you should not
need any tools to install. I have another vid showing that installation
procedure.
might as be a video for hard boiling eggs. You skipped how you replaced the
Control Arm Bushings. It’s in the title so it’s what I expect to see. Thanks
I was surprised by the difference which doing just the rears made. I
started with the rears, because they are easier, and I haven’t had tools in
my hands for a while. I used the ‘touring’ version of the Bilsteins and I
think that these damp just a little more than a stock shock. The suspension
should be pretty tight when I am done.
I noticed you chose Sachs and not Bilstein… is there a
performance/handling difference in your opinion? I need to replace mine and
I just checked my 04 325xi and there are Bilsteins in there.
I love working on my 2000 323i, ive never worked on any other car that has
been so fun fixing. Im getting ready to rebuild my suspension all around,
new control arms, struts, shocks, bushings, sway bars, springs the works.
Cant wait!
Useful video. Based on your guidance, I just did the rears this morning on
a 325i with 80,000 miles on the original shocks, and just doing the rears
made a significant difference in ride quality. Much firmer. I am waiting
for a few more parts before I do the fronts. Thanks again.
Ed, I live in a very rural part of Kansas and not to many mechanics want to
work on my 2 BMWs. I was going to take the car to the local Junk – Yard
where I get my cars worked on but watched your video and decided to take on
the task myself. $125 per strut (Bilstein) and 3 hours to do the job. You
saved me about $300 Labor costs. Thanks for a GREAT VIDEO.
Thanks!

I don’t know the exact spec.
@edzgarage I meant low profile tires

@edzgarage Thats the problem. it needs to go down, not up…

@blitzfork Really…? What was I doing starting at 1:46 I wasn’t boiling
eggs lol
@voteforpedro83 It took a few hours. I don’t remember exactly. Thanks for
the comment!
Oh….do you mainly buy them online or from the dealer/mechanic?
I loved my e46. It was a great car and did enjoy keeping it on the road.
Good luck with yours!

Where do you buy your parts from?
Good point! If you can’t find the power source it’s probably is not there.
I really don’t for sure. I bet it’s close though.
@knsaber Good luck! Thanks for the comment!

hey is there a vide of how to put together the new struts? like a full one?
how bad were the spring pads? were they replaced also?
what brand struts/shocks did u use?
My friend thanks for this I was figuring it out how to change them but I
was afraid, but now watching this vid
Great tutorial!

Thank you Sir!
Thanks for the great video Ed! I know you replaced the rear mounts, but did
you replace the front strut mounts as well?
I see you have the Sachs shock and strut. Where did you get it? Online or
dealer? If online what site. I would appreciate it. Cool video BTW.

The strut should just pull out of the hub assembly. The only thing holding
it is the pinch bolt.
Hi Jay, when does it make this sound? Just idling or driving or ?
Very helpful, many thanks. I have a spring to replace.
I have to give it to you man. Holding the camera and working like that must
have been the biggest pain in the Ass. Kudos to you!
Thanks for watching!
@scienceisgod1 Struts may be to blame or weak springs could be the problem
too.

OH WOW! THannkks! It worked we just got our rear shocks in. had to make a
run to menards but its done now. thanks for the help
This video is very helpful, i will be doing my rear shocks and springs
later this week. thanks.
Thanks for the tip!
Would my 95 325 be similar to your front shock install?

@gamesbok Thanks for the comment!
Betcha she rides and handles much better and is quieter. That must have
been some satisfying car work.
What did I miss? You saw everything I did.
Thats not true, e36 has, e46 has too
Should be pretty close to the same. You tell me… I have 335xi now 🙂
It’s still under CPO so I haven’t done much work to it yet.
@jonnysako65 Wow, that’s great! Thanks for the comment!
