Shocking! Why did it take 7 months to fix this BMW?

In this video we diagnose a Bmw x5 Hybrid with a start/stop issue.
We learn that it’s super important that we familiarize ourselfes with the system we are working on! The car was diagnosed by the dealership and an independent workshop for this problem and a battery was replaced, but the issue was still there.

If the diagnostics simply posted "starter motor failure" instead of presenting technicians with a riddle, these faults would be easily fixed. Talk to the software engineers who do an abysmal job. Since when did "time out" mean anything to a mechanic "Time Out" = "Starter Motor Failure" simple.

very good! I bet that a seperate 12v starter, outside the drivetrain, would make for a very smooth cold startup of the ICE, in my Audi I can really feel a jolt through the drivetrain, especially when the ICEis cold. On top of that, the ICEis completeley decoupled and can warm up and start to pump oil and fluids through all its systems without being coupled to the main driving power (electic at that time) of the car, the car and gears need to shortly choose a moment to couple the ICE and I can feel the DSG do some magic to make that all work the moment the ICE is asked to start by the computer of my Audi PHEV. I bet this is also a measure to prevent wear and tear on the ICE and the transmission/clutches!

Amazing logical though process well done!!! Sure you are always better to have a 12V starter motor just in case your hybrid battery is dead!!! Amazing that such a component failed so quickly, perhaps they are now toooo stressed ????

Another great video Dan. Find it hard be believe that hammer didn't fix the solenoid, perhaps you need to get it looked at?
On a serious not I also find it hard to believe that the solonoid alone can't be replaced and also question whether it's necessary to replace the belt and/or the tensioner. I know it may have been done on a 'while you're down there' basis but this assembly is only used on start-up not permanently engaged and it was mentioned that removing it was reletively simple I'd say it could be forgiven for replacing only the failed part.

Try this one for size Dan, 2012 Fiat panda 1.2 the headlights will not turn off unless the ignition is switched off, have you come across this before? Cheers

Each of DiagnoseDan Video proves that the day of total machines takeover is not tomorrow, unless the artificial intelligence is also learning from DiagnoseDan videos. Still, it will take hundreds of such videos for every vehicle make and engine model issues to start doing such efficient diagnisis.

I say dealers are just lazy. Dan did simple testing to find the problem…surely something BMW was suppose to see but rather put in new battery. Hope customer did not pay them

You can tell that the 12 volt starter wasn't doing anything. The sound of the engine turning wasn't the typical starter sound. Just one of those things 30 years experience teaches you. Doesn't surprise me a dealership could not fix it. No old mechanics in there!

It is not even complicated. The dealer should know it can start on the 12 volt starter motor or using the hybrid motor. A voltmeter on the 12 volt battery would not show a significant volt drop. You can then try bridging the solenoid(relay) teminal and it should turn the motor if you have power at the main terminal..I would probably have done that first just to prove the starter motor can turn the engine. Then check as Dan did that the solenoid feed wire is powering up. And I am just a DIYer. Not even using a scan tool as it is just a conventional starter motor effectively.
