I have a 06 E90, I did the bleed process (hold down acc for 10 sec) and the pump does work (it recirculates the coolant and spits it back into the reservoir), but the fan is still on high for some reason even on cold start up. Any idea?

Vandi says:

the flow in the hole is steady, no stuttering or pauses. It's a constant flow.

My main issue is the fan and engine overheating. The fan sounds like a jet engine, and people can hear it from a block down.
Kid crossing the street smiled because he thought I was revving the engine at him.

I went ahead and purchased the water pump and thermostat kits.
I intend on spending an additional $500 in labor fees; a buddy of mine said this was a good price, let me know if I'm wrong.
I would really like to know if it's the water pump or radiator before I make any moves..
What puzzles me is the engine temp never exceeds the middle line, only the computer says it's overheating and I'm instantly in limp-mode. It's been dangerous with this rainy weather and being stopped in the middle of the freeway isn't really for me, or anyone really.

Next Friday is my installation, I'll let you know what I find out. Hope it'll help another European fan in the future.

Oh after I change the sensor, I did top off the reservoir with coolant to the maximum level as well with the 50/50 mix. G48 coolant. Since the water pump in a thermostat were not replaced I only had to use one tenth to get the reservoir full so running the 12 minute test again should have it back up to the maximum level.

Ben T. says:

I drove for about 30 minutes after, everything was operating correctly, just two times the fan kicked on very lightly and went off right away, I feel as if I need to bleed the coolant one more time with the 12 minute test just to get any air out so that its operating correctly!!?? What do you think?

Ben T. says:

Morning, so I did the test, luckily it was not my water pump or my thermostat because they were operating correctly. All it was was a coolant temperature sensor which I spent 20 bucks getting and putting in, located right up front.

Ben T. says:

Great video.
After 12 minutes does the car automatically stop doing its testing or do you have to start the car and put the cap back on what do you do after 12 minutes a lot of videos don't indicate what to do after 12 minutes of testing. Thank you

hello,

my bmw x3 2011 had water pump failure(at 75,000) last year and both the pump and t-stat were replaced. i just recently gotten engine overheat again, literally 11,000km on the new parts. same symptoms…radiator fan would go crazy loud. also it appears that the error happens faster with Air Conditioner ON. any ideas?

Jeff Jeff says:

I had the same issue with my 08 x5. The fan normally sound loud as soon as I start the engine with the heat on, but it stops sounding when I turn off the heat. Any help please…

just spent 2 hours diagnosing a 06 325i. i ran the bleed procedure because common sense told me if it worked pump was fine. I monitored engine temp it ran around 180 f to 199f but the outlet sensor was leaking so obviously it needed replaced since a leak makes the system loose pressure. After all this at 174 the fan still runs any idea?
I only had two hours to look at all this and do a basic diagnosis the only other issue which we cannot fix at the moment is the intake vanos solenoid but its being over nighted here.

2009 BMW X5 4.8. Radiator fan came on prematurely and ran at full speed after work performed under hood. The fan worked fine before repairs made. We had removed the radiator fan assembly during our repairs. After scanning and not having any codes and having the radiator symbol illuminate in the info display, we were quite puzzled as to just what is the trouble. Eventually I looked at the fan switch on the passenger side of the radiator. We had not intentionally disconnected this sensor. At first look it appeared the sensor was connected correctly. But when I reached down and touched the connector the fan stopped, I pulled my fingers away from the connector and the fan went to high again. The connector had inadvertently come undone when removing the huge fan assembly. Securing the connection set all things right. Fan operation is now correct. Searched the internet for a couple of hours looking for information about the fan issue and nowhere did I find this scenario. I Hope this tidbit of information helps someone when working on a 2009 X5 4.8

Great video…helped check my water pump…my fan started blowing super loud, I thought it was the fan clutch at first. But it finally gave way at around 50k miles, they are known to go out around 50k, 60k… changed the thermostat as well. Most places wanted around $1,500 but found a great mechanic for $800.. good luck guys.

My 2008 335xi just started with the fan running on high within seconds of starting the car. I also have no heat in the car it just blows cold. Any thoughts. It started doing this 2 days ago when the temps here got into the teens….Thanks…………………….Philip

I have a 06 325i, On cold start up Fan doesn't run but when temps get to 80 or 90 Celsius my fan runs on high. After that the car can cool down to maybe 45 Celsius and then the fan still comes on full speed . I change tstat, bleeding process seems ok. Also if i unplugged the aux fan thermo/switch sensor that's located on the bottom radiator hose outlet the fan stops, but if i turn the ac on the fan runs normal.

Robert Ballard says:

Great before and after demonstration…. I've gone from lost to found! Likewise no codes so good to see the same situation… 1000% grateful

Viking Mike says:

Thank you very much for the information that was presented here. It was a huge amount of help to allow me to diagnose my sisters BMW water pump issue. Cheers!

Joseph Wang says:

This happened to my 135i.  After two weeks,  my water pumper broke(identified by dealer) on the road and an over-heating signal was on immediately.

The App Channel says:

Did the fan go back to normal after that repair

André Brito says:

Bad outlet radiator sensor…The ecu dont know what is the radiator outlet temperature so to failsafe it goes full blast just in case…

Joe Garza says:

I have a 2009 335i (N53) and the fan runs full on the entire time the vehicle is running. I've had it looked at by independent mechanics and they all say that my computer probably needs to go in to the dealer so they can reset it. Are there any other possibilities. Water pump and thermostat are both in working order (at least according to the mechanics).

JRC says:

I have a e70 n55, when I do the bleed steps the radiator also kick in and run at full speed. Any idea of how and why? The pump is fine because there is water shooting out in the tank. Thx
