►BMW’s push for efficiency has seen it turn the simple engine coolant thermostat into an active valve. It’s electronically controlled and can send coolant to specific passages while blocking it from others for optimal warm-up or cooling procedures. However, its complexity makes it a little more prone to failure than its predecessor. As such, if you have your B46/48 or B58 engine long-term, you’ll eventually need a heat management module replacement.

Now that it functions as more than a simple mechanical valve, BMW calls its engine coolant thermostat the “heat management module.” Regardless of the name change, it functions and fails like the old valve. It’s meant to let coolant past, but when they stop functioning, they’ll often fail closed, preventing any coolant from entering the engine. That makes for a situation where the engine will overheat after very short usage. Ignoring the overheating can cause catastrophic internal damage, so if your heat management module fails, replace it immediately.
