BMW Product Manager Gareth Foley goes over the DIY install process of installing new Bilstein 4600 Shock/Struts & H&R Springs. This upgrade is proven to improve vehicle handling and dampening capabilities over stock shocks/struts and is relatively easy to do.

Remember to always get your vehicle aligned after doing suspension work; your car will sit differently after installing new shocks/springs.

David Padilla says:

So how would I raise the suspension for more off road clearance ? not interested in lowering

Imran Khan says:

For the rear is a bit of a nightmare

kat0 says:

I never ever buy Bilstein shock. Bought two for rear on cost 350 pound and they Bumpy noise from new. Crazy

boma23 says:

Great walk through. Changing suspension isn't hard. But I would have probably been there to this day without knowing how to get through the rear trim panels, or be stood left holding a handful of broken plastic. Why don't BMW put a hatch in the side panel like everyone else? BWM seem to want to make the simplest jobs so painful. Stealership economics I suppose.

Arzhan Kinzhalin says:

I'm wondering, when assembling the strut, should the top nut be screwed down until the thread ends? How far should down should it go?

Nathaniel Moore says:

BMW should be embarrassed of the process they created to get to the top of the rear shock…they could have easily made a door or panel to avoid the need to remove 15 pcs to access the shock. Great video, after all that you should have shown resulting ride height though.

Ethan Haus says:

9:08 THE STRUT MOUNT WASHER MUST BE PLACED CORRECTLY. THE BLACK RING SIDE GOES UPWARDS. TOWARDS THE STRUT NUT AND MOUNT NUTS. NOT DOWNWARD LIKE THE VIDEO SAYS. IF YOU INSTALLED THEM LIKE THE VIDEO SAYS AND ARE EXPERIENCING ISSUES DM ME.

Bart B says:

Will using shorter springs mess the tires, even after alignment? I have read that sometimes its very hard to adjust the camber properly.

nsrracing1 says:

You didnt even show the end result how it looks like lowered. Why????

Mounir S says:

What's the number on the spreader tool?

steve timleck says:

great video well done, would love to see a pic of the before and after stance, thanks

Aim High TV says:

Would have loved to see how it looked kind of obvious for x3 owners we'd like to see what the upgrade looks like. Shoot us an update on this FCPEuro, make it due.

Grzegorz * says:

Sport, hard suspension for a smooth ride?

HarpreetKang16 says:

Would have loved to see video showing the stance after install

sundo9999 says:

Awesome! Anyone know the cost of parts and the number of hours for labor? — My e83 2010, low kms, drives VERY HARD. Would the Bilstein 4600's make it drive smoother? Will the smoother drive compromise how it sits on the road and in curves? In any case a smoother ride is preferred over how it corners. Thanks in advance.

Boy Cottchina says:

11:45 is hilarious.. thanks for great tech vid

Ryan Chen says:

Am I mistaking that the B6 is for the stock spring, or the H&R is a hardened version of the Stock height spring?

AngryPistons says:

Great video however I am looking to really SOFTEN the ride of me e83 X3 3.0i. It's an '05 and the ride really jolts my brain riding over anything 🙁

n. prince says:

For a 20"in wheelset setup, which is more ideal for the most compliant ride:

Bilstein/ HR combo

or

KW V2 coilovers?

Ron Montgomery says:

Really good of FCP Euro to post this video. Good attention to detail on alignment tabs, using new hardware, pre-positioning brake wear sensors, etc… One recommendation is to put a very light coat of anti-seize in the knuckle collar where the strut seats, will help prevent corrosion and won't hurt anything. Just keep it away from the rubber. Would like to see a video replacing factory struts using original springs where the spring compression tool is needed. Good job guys!

karl knudson says:

wow my strut replacment went nothing like this on a 09 328 i bmw , no way can you install the spring without compressing it first and there is no way to fully grab and compress spring with conventional spring compreser so i compressed spring tied it compressed with some good strong wire and released spring compreser and installed spring then cut the wire releasing spring and good to go , go figure

Bryan says:

Does it ride smoother than oem ?

Christopher Godfrey says:

I have a thin 15mm/16mm combination wrench that I use pretty much only for stabilizer links. It's actually a bicycle mechanic tool, but it works great.

Russell Filtz says:

You say the black ring washer should face down? I did that on one strut and new the strut mount is VERY stiff after releasing the spring compression. Doesn't want to rotate. I backed off the main strut nut some and it loosened slightly, but feels like the bearings are locked up/grinding. Pulled the other side off and made sure to watch the washer orientation. The black ring was facing UP, towards the upper mount. This seems more appropriate to allow the upper mount to rotate on the smaller convex side of the black ring washer. The black rings were on the convex side of the washers I have.

Jim L says:

BMW Strut Kit (E83) – E83STRUTKIT2
X3

with this kit we would not need the coil spring compression tool for the install like you normally will with the other kit?

Loïc G says:

That comes at the right time for me on the right car. Excellent video!
