ThekurtT…. Yeah it could be the rocker/valve cover, best this to do is look where it’s leaking out of, get someone to rev it hard and you see where it’s leaking, then repair where necessary
I have a 2002 BMW 540i, after giving it heavy throttle I can smell burning oil, which at first bothered me but wasnt to bad. It now leaks oil on the ground and after very heavy throttle, it smokes when I stop. I assume it is just an oil leak somewhere. Could it be the valvecover gasket? A speedy reply would be awesome!
the plastic covers cost more than $300 alone
pay the man, make sure it is NEW, not used cover

do you have to apply rtv engine sealant to the whole vcg or just some spots? & how tight did you tighten the nuts when putting back the valve cover?

Did you disconnect the battery to avoid the ground from sparking? or does it not do that?

Are there torque values for the nuts on the valve cover that we should be worried about?
make sure to put the ground strap under the coil packs…or else youre going to have problems
Thank you for this post. On my 2001 325i…I do not think I would have been able to get at it without this advice. There are wires and vacuum hoses hugging the back of the VC that I could have not even seen without removing the cabin filter housing. Cheers!!!

right by mine it was the left front wheel,be careful by changing it the bolt can be damaged and dont put a screw into the whole u can damage something.use some wd40 to clean the whole.
bought a gasket online for 20 bucks and did it myself in like 20-30 minutes, of all things this was actually really easy

Hey really like all your videos..great to be able to learn a little about BMW’s. Just curious how you learned how to do some of these things?
I find that if you use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat the rubber gasket, the heat will soften them enough to make removal a lot easier.
