nicholsonj2252: Hi, The problem that you’ve described sounds like the
alternator housing is stuck to the support tower. If you gently tap with a
soft mallet / rubber hammer you should be able to free it. If the belt was
OK just continue riding it until 48,000 miles. Then plan on spending some
time breaking the alternator free. Good luck & Happy New Year, Chris
I just bought an ’03 1150rt and the previous owner said he just changed
the alternator belt. It squeaks for a little while upon starting until the
engine gets warmed up. Is it most likely a loose belt? I’d appreciate your
advice. Great videos by the way.
Chris, awesome video. I have a 1999 BMW R1100R with about 38k and have an
issue that I was wondering if you could give input on. It is in storage now
but before this I put in a new battery, an Odyssey, and it died very
quickly. Now when I got it started last I had to jump start it using a
running midsize sedan to jump start it jump start, it wouldn’t start if the
car wasn’t running. I then would pull the cables once it started and it
would die right away. So I think that there is an alternator issue, but
could it be only the belt or the whole alternator? Thanks for your help!
You have some nice shit on R1150s, I owned a R1150rs untell some ASSHOLE
hit me I loved that Bike,Now the K1300s love it, SO when do you think do
some Videos on the K1300s. Keep up the good work thank U.
Oh yes, like a stuck pig! That is the first indicator that the belt is worn
or not adjusted properly. Squealing while warm or a burnt rubber smell
indicates that the belt is coming apart and will fail very soon.
Just about to hit 50K mi on my GS, and was figuring it was time to do this
service along with the other things I have slated. It looks a lot easier
than anticipated. Thanks again.
Thanks, Chris, for the video – very helpful. Can you tell me: do you ever
hear these belts squeal for a few seconds at start up when they are ready
for replacement?
Chris – another great video which has been helpful . Quick question – got a
2000 model R1100S , 36000 miles . When I get the belt cover off and slacken
the 3 bolts the alternator pulley does not drop and the belts stays tight –
any thoughts what the issue is . The belt is in good condition so I just
re-tighterD everything and left it
I have been watching your videos for the past several weeks, and
researching other maintenance tips for my 2004 R1150RT. I am doing the
alternator belt tonight to finish up a service that includes new brake
pads, brake system bleed (Wheel and Control circuits front and back), fuel
filter, air filter, fork seals and alternator belt (pending). You are the
man!! and now I feel like the man. Again thanks 🙂 you probably saved me
big bucks.

Huge help, thanks Chris for the trouble to upload and share your skills
Great, but make sure you torque the belt properly. There is actually an
adjustment at the rear, left of the alternator that requires a torque
wrench.
muy buenos videos, thanks for the excelent info
Very nice, thank you.
Hi, The customer had recently purchased the bike so this was the first
service since he has owned it. Thanks, Chris
great video!
Great video! I like the tip about marking the service date on the new belt.
Danke!
deserve a british pint of ale and a bacon and egg sandwich
Thanks Chris! I’ve suspected the belt as the source of the noise — now
i’ll get a new one in there.
