JoAnna Jensen says:

question, please help, I purchased a 325 2006 bmw. I specifically asked
the seller if there were any issues with the car and the seller said no
however I brought the car in and found out it has an oil leak. Question
I found out that a bmw dealership told the seller that their was an oil
leak right before he sold it to me, the statement says : “Oil filter
housing gasket is leaking drive belt tensioner is leaking”. This was told
to the seller in april 2013 he sold me the car approx the end of june 2013.
can this issue cause further damage because the seller did not fix this
issue, can this leak and drive belt tensioner cause another oil leak?

Thanks for the DIY – worked great for my e39 replacement but I did have to
battle with mechanical fan and shroud… One tip for removing/replacing
the alternator that I figured out (others may have noticed this too). You
talk about wedging the boss nut to release some tension to remove the
alternator (I did that and it helped). Putting it back in was a problem and
it dawned on me that with the alternator out of the car you could thread
the lower bolt into the boss nut and give it a few taps to drive the boss
nut out just a hair to widen the gap. I think that would also work well on
removing the alternator too. Just make sure to torque it up properly upon
installation to pull the boss nut back into place.

Thank you. I did this job on my E46 2003 330i last saturday it has 65k km,
but 10 years of city driving. I’m an amateur mechanic. My car got this leak
for about one year ago, and I had no a clue about the source of this leak,
I thought the valve cover gasket was the culprit. Without this video I
would have to pay a good money to my local BMW dealer shop, down here in
Mexico. I had to remove the radiator fan because my car has automatic
trans, but this is not a big deal using the proper tools. By the way, the
old filter housing gasket in my car was like a hard plastic (not flexible
rubber anymore) and partially broken. I don’t know how BMW was not able to
use a better material or different design on this. Same case for the valve
cover gasket, which I’ll replace it next weekend. Thanks again dude!!

Probably the best DIY on an E46 I’ve seen, thank you!! I just completed
this on my 2002 325i and halfway through my family was so impressed with my
bad assery especially the cardboard to hold the 6 OFH bolts. Of course I
did NOT give you credit, but I will do so here 🙂 My older model had
different tensioners and power steering pump, but not so different that I
couldn’t figure it out. Anyway, really appreciate your work here!

Really well put together DIY video. No step left out, clear instruction.
Not looking forward to doing the job now though!

I’m having trouble finding where to replace the oil filter adapter o ring
on my 318i 1996 There were none there when I removed it on the thermostat
type component, I believe it helps regulate oil pressure? HELP!

Feared6b6y6many says:

Thanks a lot for this video helped me every step.

eddyemm says:

Thanks for making the video. Im half way through replacing the gasket on my
mates car. Its not too bad an extra amount of work if the car is an
automatic. Just need a 32mm? open ended spanner and a flat screwdriver. You
can jam the screw driver against a couple of pulley bolts whilst turning
the nut on the fan coupling clockwise to remove the fan. this video has
been a great help. Now for the re-fit. Thanks!

JCruzify1 says:

Did you have to lift the car to get under or can you still reach bolt to
the power steering pump reservoir from under the hood?

Jettech Mech says:

Damn great video and I love to see how you used bolt size torque chart for
torque… i also need to replace OFHG tomorrow.. i was wondering on the
torque pattern used? I’m thinking start from center two and work outward?
Thanks.

PMPDaddy68 says:

@kidstocks i would need to see it, if you have oil on your connections for
your vanos then you probably need to look into those.

MARC MARIEN says:

If you disconnect the negative side of battery you don’t have to worry
about grounding the positive terminal from the alternator . Very
informitive video I was wondering what was leaking in that area now I know.
Thank you.

65insanity says:

Great video.One of the best I have ever seen.Like a pro,Thanks,

PMPDaddy68 says:

Well, they have book hours they charge based on I guess your ‘average’
mechanic, even though it may take them only two hours. Personally, I feel
it better to do this job myself. You have to base it on your skillset. Is
it worth your piece of mind to pay someone else to do it? If you have the
skills to do it right the first time (and the tools) then you have your
answer.

PMPDaddy68 says:

throw up a picture somewhere. otherwise have no idea what you are referring
to.

Charlene Li says:

BMW service charged me 3.5 hours labor for replacing housing gaskets; i
strongly feel that i am overly charged for this job. Would appreciate your
thoughts… THANKS…

Edgar Garcia says:

Great step by step instruction. I really learned a lot.

Yumi Lin says:

u have to buy the torque wranch …. they have different sizes….

Fromthehipglock30 says:

Will this vid pretty much be the same for a 95 m50

sophiaspot says:

If I’m changing the OFHG do I have to take off the belts? Or did u do that
just to change the tensioners?

Jessica Bryon says:

My husband has an 01 330i and everyone I asked quoted between 700-1000, but
the BMW specialist I got a second opinion from (after the dealership wanted
2500 to do valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, and oil pan
gasket) he told me that most of the time its not actually leaking from the
oil pan. Usually it’s only the oil flying back while your driving getting
all over everything leaking from the valve cover or oil filter housing
gasket or both in bad occasions, like my husband’s.
