►BMW Valvetronic is one of the most variable valve lift systems used today…when it’s working. All high-mileage Valvetronic systems have trouble with their eccentric shaft actuators, so replacing it is more of a when not an if. Fear not, though, as the eccentric shaft replacement process isn’t rocket science.

Once you’re well above 100,000 miles, there’s a good chance your actuator motor is pretty tired. The tell-tale signs are fairly straightforward for an engine losing its throttle control: trouble starting, a rough idle, and a handful of BMW-specific DME codes related to Valvetronic function. You’ll still be able to drive the car without it, but we highly recommend you fix the failed motor as soon as possible.
