Found my answer on the M5board. emcallum sez to turn the steering all the
way to the right if you’re working on the left side; that’ll expose the
ball joint so the tool can seat properly. A little PB Blaster and the tool
worked like a charm. HFT #99849, $20. Thanks again.

Great video! I’m currently following your procedures on my ’00 M5. All has
gone well ’til now. I bot the HF ball joint separator you show in the
video, but can’t get the lower jaw to slide in between the bottom of the
steering knuckle and the top of the ball joint — the “U” opening in the
jaw doesn’t appear wide enough; I therefore can’t get the tool in deep
enough to reach the stud to press onto. How did you get the tool in far
enough to engage, without damaging the rubber boot?

Barney Wobba says:

I replaced the whole part as the balljoints can get sloppy with age.

Are the PU Bushings worth the extra cost? I want to buy some too

Please contact @minizguy, this is his video on the channel. -Ryan

Nice video. Did you get any difference in the steering response? I am
upgradering to KW V3 coilovers on my 2001 M5 in a few weeks and I am hoping
to replace the bushing for both the control arm and the thrust arm. I have
good experience with PowerFlex in my E34.

E39Source says:

The whole part if possible, but not absolutely required unless broken.

E39Source says:

Never a bad idea, I would if you could.

E39Source says:

I would assume, yes. Just different parts.

What is better to replace the whole part or just the brushings? my car is
an e39 530i

Gjergj n says:

Great job! Thank you for sharing. Did you have to do a wheel alignment
after this job?

Max Lindner says:

Thx for this DIY

noe iniguez says:

im going to replace my control arms, and my car needs alignment. Do i do it
before or after? plus my car feels a little jumpy any idea what it might
be, its and e39 525i

E39Source says:

Definitely after. And, check out your rear sway bar and/or stabilizer links
about the jumpiness.

ATLANT VARUOSAD says:

If you want some PF bushes in your car, than get a new arms and put new
bushes into them. Old arm and new bushes just waste of money.

senser1080 says:

This shares the same procedure for the 540i, correct?
