Hello Ryan! My question comes long time after you published this video but hopefully you could help me as you seem to be an expert in e39 M5 side mirror issues.

In my e39 M5 the driver side folding mirror has damaged folding gears. I’ll try to locate the gears and try to purchade the new ones from somewhere. But I have a question: is the location of the gears behind the mirror glass or somewhere else? In case they are behind the glass only the glass needs to be removed and not the whole mirror, I guess? Thank you very much!

My wingmirror is starting to play up, not fully folding, this looks like a mission, I applaud your patients

I did this on my E39 540i. I would have been happy with stock 540i mirrors but since i also have an E38 with the boxier mirror designs i wanted to differentiate the two cars and since the E39 is basically a rounder version of the E38 i chose the M mirrors for it

Just so to know, there where small and big mirrors, without m5 mirrors. small one had electrical mirror control, heating (not foldable electrically, hand only and no dimming), and big mirrors had all the functions that Ryans' m5 mirrors have.

Hi guys
I have an E38 740i and the side mirror is loose for some reason I open the door panel and thought maybe the screws from inside were loose but actually it was perfectly fit when I drive on the highway the side mirror moves around not sure what to do should replace the whole side mirror or is there another solution please let me know .
Thanks

Great video, very helpful. I found it that the shadow line can be installed very easily if you install the bottom clips 1st, pull the top of the door panel back a bit and install the trim.

Remember, "the bottom one goes on the bottom!" (2:25) Nice video and all in good fun.

Will a regular 5-series retrofitted with these mirrors utilize the angling (when in reverse) function?

notimeboy says:

as always, good work, clear and concise instructions. i'm about to undertake this project as i cracked my mirror housing recently. i will be referencing this video as i go. thanks again.

Hello Ryan. I take it that you must have a scientific background like electrical or mechanical engineering? I doubt that most owners would be confident enough to undertake such procedures where damage might occur!

I really love it when a great car gets the care it deserves! ☺

That "I" probably means 1.
