Thanks for this video guys. My e39 540ia is stuck with the switch “on” so I think I need to replace just the switch not the tumbler. Thankfully it looks like a pretty straight forward job to complete!
Could be a sporadic issue, maybe replacing it is your best bet.
after cleaning the ignition switch and fixing the issues the check engine light came on turned off and now on again..any suggestions?

Thanks for the vid! I replaced my ignition switch this week and now my electrical drain, errant seat belt lights, intermittent radio and seat warmer issues are all gone!

There is a chance. Do me a favor. A lot of times when the ignition switch begins to fail, when you lower the passenger side sun visor the driver’s steering wheel moves. I am experiencing a battery drain which pushed me to replace my ignition switch. Does your turn signal still turn on? Step outside your car with the level “on”. It is possible your turn signal stalk is failing. If it’s not the ignition switch, your other problems could be a failing MID and HVAC unit. Try to get us more info.
