Can you tell me where you sent the ABS module too?
To fix the module about £200 ,uk my 728i did this i changed a wheel sensor £20, all done all fixed. The chances of it being the module are very slim ,always a sensor will go first ive done hundreds ,of sensors .728i 735 740 .never the module

To amend my previous post, this E39 does have issues with the electrical portion of the ABS module(unlike most other models of BMW's)because of the exhaust getting the unit too hot due to it's poorly engineered location. Most other BMW's you can tap on the unit and it will begin to work again for awhile, since it is usually not electrical at all. (until the brushes lock up again)
My understanding is that it is usually the brushes that fail in the BMW ABS modules and not the electrical unit. In that case the module has to be removed and you can either buy a good unit and swap the electrical part out(so you do not have to get it reprogrammed) or replace the entire unit and have it reprogrammed and then refill and bleed the system.

If your abs pump goes out it will throw the same code like wheel sensor
